The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) runs a Postgraduate Local Scholarship Programme that supports Ghanaian citizens studying for a Master's or PhD at a public university inside Ghana. Not enrolled in another Master's or PhD programme at the time you apply.
How to apply step by step
Secure admission to your Master's or PhD programme at a Ghanaian public university before applying, since the scholarship requires proof of admission.
Visit the GETFund scholarship portal at scholarships.getfund.gov.gh and create an account when the annual call opens.
Complete the online application form with your personal, academic and programme details.
Upload scanned copies of your admission letter, degree certificate and transcript, and any other documents the portal requests.
Submit before the stated closing date and track your application status through the portal, since GETFund vets and shortlists applicants after the window closes.
Timing to expect
GETFund opens the postgraduate local scholarship call once a year and keeps the window open for about a month. The 2024/25 cycle opened on 15 November 2024 and closed on 15 December 2024. Application dates shift slightly each year, so check the official portal directly rather than relying on a fixed calendar date, and apply as soon as the call opens since places are limited relative to demand.

GETFund's scholarship sits alongside a separate body, the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, which operates under the Office of the President and awards scholarships to Ghanaians at local tertiary institutions including nursing and teacher training colleges, colleges of agriculture, technical universities and public and private universities. Postgraduate study in Ghana is a significant financial commitment on top of years already spent on a first degree, and self-funding a Master's or PhD is out of reach for many graduates.
