Ghana National Service Scheme: Registration, Posting and Reporting

TL;DR

Ghana's National Service Scheme is now the National Service Authority (NSA), and registration happens online at gnsa.gov.gh. You register with your index number, activate your PIN with a small payment through an Agricultural Development Bank branch or mobile money, then check your posting on posting.gnsa.gov.gh before reporting to your assigned station.

  • 🎓 The old name, National Service Scheme (NSS), was replaced by the National Service Authority (NSA) after a 2024 law change.

  • 📩 Registration windows are short, often about a week, so watch the official portal for exact dates each service year.

  • 💵 PIN activation requires a small fee paid through ADB Bank or mobile money.

  • ⏱️ The 2025/26 service year began November 1, 2025, with personnel reporting to stations from that date.

Ghana National Service Scheme: Registration, Posting and Reporting

From National Service Scheme to National Service Authority

For decades, Ghana's mandatory one-year national service program for tertiary graduates ran as the National Service Scheme (NSS) under the Ministry of Education. Following the passage of the NSA Bill in July 2024, the program transitioned into the National Service Authority (NSA), a change intended to widen its mandate beyond simple postings into skills development for young graduates after their service year. You will still see both names in circulation, since many students and institutions continue to refer to it informally as NSS.

The practical effect for you as a graduate is a new official portal. Registration, PIN activation, and posting checks now run through gnsa.gov.gh rather than the older nss.gov.gh address.

Who Registers

If you are a Ghanaian graduate of a public or accredited private tertiary institution, diploma or degree level, you are required to complete national service before you take up most formal employment. Your institution submits your index number and result details to the NSA, similar to how Nigerian universities submit graduate lists to NYSC, and this submission is what makes your index number valid on the registration portal.

How to Register

  1. Visit the official NSA portal and locate the PIN and Enrollment section.

  2. Enter your index number and date of birth to retrieve your PIN code.

  3. Take your PIN code to a branch of Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) or use mobile money to pay the activation fee, which was around GHC40 to GHC41 as reported for the 2025/26 registration cycle by Graphic Online .

  4. Return to the portal, complete your enrollment form with personal, academic and contact details.

  5. Submit your preferred region or category of posting where the form allows it.

Registration windows are tight. For the 2025/26 service year, the portal opened for about a week in October 2025 before closing, according to the same Graphic Online report. Missing the window can delay your posting to a later batch, so register as soon as your institution confirms your index number is loaded.

Checking Your Posting

Once registration closes, the NSA processes postings and publishes them on the separate posting portal, posting.gnsa.gov.gh. Log in with your index number and date of birth to see your assigned region, district, and host institution or organization. Postings balance your preference against national need, similar to how NYSC balances Nigerian corps member postings, so a preferred region is not guaranteed.

Reporting to Your Station

Your posting notice states your reporting date and the office or school you report to. For the 2025/26 service year, personnel were expected to report to their stations from November 1, 2025, with official duties starting November 3, 2025. Bring your posting letter, identification, and academic documents on your first day, since your host institution confirms your posting details before formally accepting you into service.

What Happens During Service

National service in Ghana runs for one year, typically in education, health, local government, or other public and private sector placements the NSA approves. You receive a monthly allowance during service, and completion earns you a National Service Certificate, a document many Ghanaian employers expect to see before confirming permanent employment, much as NYSC certificates function in Nigeria.
