What the GMAT Focus Edition Tests
The GMAT Focus Edition replaced the earlier GMAT format and now runs on three sections only: Quantitative Reasoning (21 questions), Verbal Reasoning (23 questions) and Data Insights (20 questions), each timed at 45 minutes. Total testing time is 2 hours and 15 minutes, with one optional 10-minute break built in. The exam removed the Analytical Writing Assessment essay and dropped geometry and sentence-correction question types that appeared in the older format, shifting more weight onto data interpretation and multi-source reasoning in the Data Insights section.
How Scoring Works
Your overall score runs from 205 to 805 in 10-point steps, and each of the three sections scores separately from 60 to 90. Schools weigh the total score most heavily, but admissions committees also look at your section scores, particularly Quantitative Reasoning if you apply from a non-quantitative background. The exam includes a Question Review & Edit feature that lets you flag and change up to three answers per section before time runs out, so pacing strategy now includes deciding which questions to leave for review.
Score Benchmarks Across Destinations
Programs ranked among the global top 20 to 30 tend to admit students with scores toward the upper end of the range, while solid regional and national programs across Southeast Asia, Australia and Europe accept a wider band. Rather than target a single number, check the class profile published on each program's own admissions page, since averages shift by intake year and the figure that matters is the middle 80 percent range the school reports for its latest class. A strong score raises your odds at every destination, but work experience, essays and interview performance carry real weight too, especially at programs that value career progression over raw test score.
Building a Preparation Timeline
Most applicants need 2 to 3 months of consistent study to move from a diagnostic score to a competitive one, and short, frequent sessions work better than occasional long ones. Start with a full-length practice exam using official GMAT prep software to find your baseline, then split remaining study time based on which section drags your score down most. Data Insights rewards practice with data sufficiency and multi-source reasoning question types specifically, since these formats rarely appear on other standardized tests you may have already taken.
Preparation Resources
Official GMAT Prep from GMAC gives the most realistic practice questions and mock exams, since the adaptive algorithm mirrors the actual test. Many applicants pair it with a structured course, either self-paced video content or a live class, particularly for the Data Insights section, which is newer and has fewer practice materials in circulation than Quant and Verbal. Study groups with other MBA applicants from your country or region help you stay on schedule and give feedback on timed practice sections, and several ASEAN business school alumni networks run informal peer prep groups you find through LinkedIn or your target school's admissions office.
Registering and Sitting the Exam in ASEAN
GMAT test centers operate in major ASEAN cities, including Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City, and the exam is also available online in most countries in the region. Register through the official mba.com portal, where you also find the current exam fee for your country, since pricing varies by testing location. Book your test date only after your first full practice exam gives you a realistic sense of how much preparation time you need, and leave a buffer before application deadlines in case you want to retake it.
GMAT or GRE
Most MBA programs that accept the GMAT also accept the GRE, and some accept an in-house Executive Assessment for candidates with more years of work experience. If you already hold GRE scores from another application round, check the specific program's policy before committing to a fresh GMAT run, since retaking a standardized test costs both money and preparation time you spend instead on application essays and recommendations.
