How oil and gas graduate trainee hiring works in Nigeria

Unlike bank trainee schemes that each employer runs on its own, Nigeria's oil and gas sector routes a large share of graduate training through the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), the regulator that pushes local content in the industry. NCDMB partners with operators and service companies to place Nigerian graduates into structured training that combines classroom instruction with supervised work on active projects. Some oil and gas companies also run their own in-house graduate schemes outside the NCDMB structure, but the board's programs give the widest reach for students without existing industry contacts.

NCDMB Oil and Gas Field Readiness Training Program

NCDMB is running a large-scale training push aimed at preparing over 10,000 young Nigerians for skilled roles as new oil and gas projects reach final investment decision, according to the board's own announcement in October 2025. The program covers ten high-demand skill tracks: subsea engineering, underwater welding, control and automation engineering, helicopter piloting, seamanship, production and maintenance engineering, QA/QC engineering, geoscience engineering, and digitization. Eligibility

• OND, HND, or BSc in petroleum, mechanical, chemical, electrical, civil, gas, welding, metallurgy, geology, geophysics, computer science, or a related field

How to register

Applications run through the NOGIC JQS platform at nogicjqs.gov.ng. New users create an account and complete a full profile before registering for the program. You can select up to three preferred skill tracks, listed in order of priority, so decide your ranking before you start the form.

NCDMB partner programs with operators

NCDMB also runs shorter, company-specific schemes with individual operators. One example paired with Renaissance Africa Energy trains graduates and technicians in mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation engineering competencies, combining three months of classroom instruction with nine months of structured on-the-job training at partner service companies. A separate NCDMB, Renaissance, and PETAN (Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria) graduate internship track deploys cohorts of about 100 graduates from engineering, geology, ICT, and natural sciences backgrounds to PETAN member companies for structured, supervised placements. Applying to individual oil and gas companies

Beyond NCDMB-linked programs, major operators and service companies in Nigeria also recruit engineering and science graduates directly through their own careers pages, usually requiring a minimum of Second Class Upper in a relevant discipline plus completed NYSC. These direct hires compete with far fewer applicants than NCDMB's national intakes, since they are not widely advertised outside company websites and industry job boards, so checking each company's own site regularly gives you an edge.
