GTEC Accreditation Rules for Online and Distance Degrees in Ghana

TL;DR

GTEC (Ghana Tertiary Education Commission) accredits both the university offering a distance or online degree and the specific study centre where you attend classes. A degree from an accredited university is not automatically valid if your study centre lacks separate GTEC approval.

  • 🎓 Public universities like UEW, UCC, UDS and UG run GTEC-accredited distance programs

  • 📩 Each distance study centre needs its own GTEC approval for location, staff and facilities

  • Check your program and centre status on GTEC's website before you pay fees

  • GTEC clarified this rule in April 2026 after confusion over unapproved centres

GTEC Accreditation Rules for Online and Distance Degrees in Ghana

What GTEC accredits

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) is the regulator for public and private tertiary institutions in Ghana, formed in 2020 under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act (Act 1023), which merged the National Accreditation Board and the National Council for Tertiary Education into GTEC. GTEC accredits universities, individual programs, and for distance and online study, the physical study centres where those programs run.

Accreditation for distance learning works on two levels. GTEC first checks that the parent university and the specific program meet academic standards for content, staffing, and assessment. It then checks that each study centre where students attend tutorials or sit exams has the infrastructure, qualified facilitators, and learner support needed to deliver that program properly.

Why centre-level approval matters

A university can hold full GTEC accreditation while one of its distance study centres does not. In April 2026, GTEC issued a statement to clarify this point after reports suggested public universities had lost accreditation for distance learning altogether.

GTEC confirmed that distance learning programs at universities including the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), the University of Cape Coast (UCC), the University for Development Studies (UDS), and the University of Ghana (UG) remain accredited where properly situated and resourced. The commission stressed that a study centre operating without its own GTEC approval is not automatically recognized, even when it is affiliated with an accredited parent university, according to Graphic Online .

This matters because your certificate lists the university, not the study centre. If the centre where you actually studied was never approved, you may only discover the problem when you apply for a job, a professional licence, or admission to a further degree and the certifying body asks GTEC to confirm your program's accreditation history.

What GTEC checks at each study centre

  • Adequate physical and digital infrastructure for teaching and assessment

  • Qualified facilitators assigned to that specific location

  • Library access and ICT resources for enrolled students

  • Learner support services, including academic advising and tutorial scheduling

  • A formal GTEC approval record tied to that location, separate from the university's general accreditation

If a centre is missing any of these, GTEC treats it as unapproved. A degree earned there risks non-recognition for further study, professional licensing, or employment that requires a GTEC-verified qualification.

How to confirm a program before you enroll

  1. Visit GTEC's website and search for the university and program you plan to apply to.

  2. Ask the university's distance education directorate to confirm that your specific study centre, not just the university overall, has GTEC approval.

  3. Request the accreditation reference number or approval letter for that centre in writing before you pay fees.

  4. Treat newly opened centres, or centres located far from the main campus with unclear affiliation, with extra caution until the university confirms them directly.

If you are already enrolled at an unclear centre

Contact your university's distance education directorate and ask them to state, in writing, whether your centre holds current GTEC approval. If they cannot confirm it, contact GTEC directly and ask for clarification on that centre's status. Keep copies of every response. If you are early in your program and the centre cannot produce approval documentation, ask about transferring to a confirmed centre rather than continuing to accumulate credits that a future employer or institution might not recognize.

Red flags to watch for

Walk away from any program that cannot produce a GTEC reference for both the program and the study centre, that pressures you to pay before you see documentation, or that promises a degree in a timeframe far shorter than the standard duration for that qualification. GTEC exists so you can check these claims independently instead of relying on a recruiter's word.
