HND to BSc Top-Up Degree Programs and Conversion Routes in Nigeria

HND holders convert to a bachelor's degree mainly through JAMB Direct Entry, which places most HND graduates at 200 level and some Upper Credit or Distinction holders at 300 level. Universities also run affiliated top-up and part-time degree programs specifically for HND conversion.
🎓 Direct Entry usually places HND holders at 200 level, skipping the first year of a degree.
Some universities admit Upper Credit and Distinction HND holders straight into 300 level.
📩 Your HND course and the degree course you apply for need to match closely.
Affiliated top-up and part-time programs exist for HND holders who already work full time.
Two main routes from HND to BSc
An HND already represents years of study when you count the National Diploma, SIWES and the HND stage itself. Nigerian universities recognize this through two main conversion routes: JAMB's Direct Entry scheme into a standard full-time degree, and affiliated or part-time top-up programs run directly by universities for HND holders. Which route fits you depends on whether you study full-time on a main campus or need a program built around a job.
JAMB Direct Entry for HND holders
Direct Entry registration runs through the same JAMB portal as UTME, in a separate window JAMB opens later in the admission cycle. You submit your HND certificate or statement of result along with your O-level credits, list your university and course choices, and the universities you choose screen your application against your HND classification and course match. Most universities place HND holders at 200 level, letting you skip the first year of the degree. A number of institutions place HND holders with Upper Credit or Distinction at 300 level instead, cutting the remaining study time further, though this varies by university and department rather than applying as a fixed national rule.
Why accreditation status matters
Universities check that NBTE accredited the specific HND program you completed before considering your Direct Entry application. An HND from a program NBTE downgraded or denied accreditation weakens your application, regardless of your CGPA. Confirm your polytechnic program's accreditation status with NBTE directly if you are unsure, especially if you attended a newer or private polytechnic.
Course matching matters
Universities check that your HND course lines up closely with the BSc course you apply for. An HND in Accountancy points toward a BSc in Accounting or a related business course, not an unrelated science degree. If your HND field has no direct BSc equivalent at your target university, look at the closest related course rather than assuming any Direct Entry application gets accepted regardless of subject fit.
Affiliated and part-time top-up programs
Outside standard Direct Entry, several universities run affiliated, sandwich or part-time BSc top-up programs specifically for HND holders, often through their part-time or distance learning divisions. These programs suit HND holders already working, since classes commonly run in the evenings, on weekends or during set vacation blocks rather than on a standard weekday timetable. Entry requirements mirror Direct Entry, HND classification and course match, but the program schedule and, sometimes, the total time to complete the degree differ from the full-time track.
Comparing the two routes
| Route | Study mode | Typical entry level |
|---|---|---|
| JAMB Direct Entry, full-time | Standard weekday campus program | 200 level, sometimes 300 level for Upper Credit and above |
| Affiliated/part-time top-up | Evenings, weekends or vacation blocks | 200 level, program structure set by the university |
Documents to prepare
HND certificate or statement of result showing your classification.
Original O-level result used for your ND and HND admissions.
NYSC discharge or exemption certificate, if your target program asks for it, since some universities require this before admitting HND holders who already served.
Any SIWES or industrial training report your university asks you to submit alongside your HND transcript.
A policy shift is in progress
Nigeria's Federal Government announced plans in January 2026 to grant polytechnics power to award degrees directly instead of HNDs, according to Naija News , a move that would eventually reduce reliance on top-up conversion. The plan has no confirmed rollout date, and reporting so far doesn't say whether it would apply to HND certificates already awarded. Until it takes effect at your polytechnic, Direct Entry and affiliated top-up programs remain the confirmed routes from an HND to a full degree.
Before you apply
Confirm your HND classification early, since Lower Credit and Pass holders face tighter competition for Direct Entry slots than Upper Credit and Distinction holders. Contact your target university's admissions office directly to confirm current entry requirements for your specific HND course, since faculties revise their Direct Entry brochures and course-matching rules from one admission cycle to the next.
