How Canada Student Loan and Grant Money Is Split and Disbursed Across Your Fall and Winter Terms

NSLSC pays out your Canada Student Loan and Grant money in separate disbursements tied to each study period your school confirms, not as one lump sum for the year. A change in your enrolment or course load partway through the year changes what is left to disburse.
📩 Money moves only after your school submits a Confirmation of Enrolment for that study period
🏠 A fall plus winter academic year normally means two separate disbursements
⏱️ A signed Master Student Financial Assistance Agreement (MSFAA) needs to be on file before any funds go out
Dropping below the aid course load threshold mid-year triggers a reassessment of what is left to come
Your Aid Arrives in Pieces, Not One Payment
When NSLSC assesses your Canada Student Loan and Canada Student Grant for the year, that assessment covers your full period of study, often a fall term plus a winter term. NSLSC does not send that full amount in one payment at the start of the year. It releases the money in separate disbursements, each tied to a specific study period your school confirms you are actually attending.
This period-by-period release protects both you and the government. You receive funding for the term you are actually in once your school verifies you are enrolled and attending, not for a future term that has not started yet.
What Has to Be on File Before Money Moves
A completed application and assessment for the study period, submitted through your province or territory or through NSLSC.
A signed Master Student Financial Assistance Agreement (MSFAA), the one-time agreement that covers your federal loans across your studies.
A Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) from your school for the specific term, verifying you are registered and attending at the course load your assessment used.
NSLSC holds funds for a term until your school submits that term's Confirmation of Enrolment. If your school is slow to submit it, your disbursement waits with it, so check with your financial aid office early in the term if a payment has not appeared.
A Typical Fall and Winter Split
For a student on a standard two-term academic year, the pattern usually runs like this: your school submits a Confirmation of Enrolment near the start of the fall term, and NSLSC processes it and disburses the funding tied to that term. Near the start of the winter term, your school submits a second Confirmation of Enrolment, and NSLSC disburses the funding tied to that term.
The amount attached to each disbursement comes from your overall assessment and the length of that specific study period, not a fixed even split. Track when a payment is expected using the funding tracker tool in your NSLSC online account.
| Study period | What triggers the disbursement |
|---|---|
| Fall term | School submits the fall Confirmation of Enrolment after your MSFAA is signed |
| Winter term | School submits the winter Confirmation of Enrolment near the start of that term |
| Added or extended term | New Confirmation of Enrolment and a new assessment for the added period |
What Changes If Your Enrolment Shifts Mid-Year
If your course load drops below the threshold for full-time aid partway through the year, your school reports the change and NSLSC reassesses the funding tied to any disbursement still to come. Money already received for the completed portion of the term is not typically clawed back for a load change reported partway through, but the remaining disbursement gets recalculated against your new status.
If you withdraw from your program entirely before a term starts, that term's disbursement does not go out. If you withdraw after a term has started and after receiving that term's funding, your school reports the withdrawal date, and NSLSC and your school work out whether part of that disbursement needs repaying based on how much of the term you completed.
If you extend your program or add a term you had not originally planned, your school submits a new Confirmation of Enrolment for the added period, generating a new assessment and a new disbursement rather than an adjustment to an existing one.
If a Disbursement Is Late or Looks Wrong
Check your NSLSC online account for the status of your application and any reassessment notices.
Confirm with your school's financial aid office that they submitted your Confirmation of Enrolment for the current term.
Confirm your MSFAA is signed and still valid, since an expired or missing agreement blocks disbursement.
Contact NSLSC directly if your school confirms its part is done and the payment still has not appeared.
Most disbursement delays trace back to a missing Confirmation of Enrolment or an unsigned MSFAA rather than an error in your assessment. Start with those two documents before assuming your funding amount itself is wrong.
