How Studielink Works for Canadian Applicants to Dutch Universities

Studielink is the national portal every applicant to a Dutch university uses. You register there first, add your program as a study choice, then the university and (if you qualify) DUO connect to your account separately once Studielink notifies them.
📩 Register on Studielink with your passport details and study choice
The university opens its own admission portal after Studielink notifies it
Upload documents and pay any deposit through the university's own system, not Studielink
Accept your offer by changing your status to "enrolled" in Studielink
Most Canadian students never see a DUO link, since DUO financing is EU/EEA-based
What Studielink actually does
Studielink is the central registration system every Dutch university and university of applied sciences uses for admissions. It is not an application form by itself. It is the hub that tells a university you want to apply to a specific program, then routes your registration to that university's own admission system and, separately, to DUO for financing where relevant. Think of it as the switchboard, not the destination.
The order Canadian applicants need to follow
Create a Studielink account using your passport information. Non-Dutch applicants without a BSN (Dutch citizen service number) use an activation link sent by email instead of the DigiD login Dutch residents use.
Add a "study choice" inside your account: the exact program and start date you want. You can add more than one study choice if you are applying to several programs.
Studielink sends your study choice to the university. Your status changes to something like "requested" while the university processes it.
The university opens its own admission portal (each university runs its own, often called something like Osiris or an in-house applicant portal) and emails you instructions. All document upload, from transcripts to your passport copy to proof of English proficiency, happens in that university portal, not in Studielink.
The university reviews your documents and makes an admission decision inside its own system, then updates your Studielink status to reflect the decision.
Once admitted, you accept your offer by changing your Studielink status to "enrollment requested." This is the step that confirms you are taking the place.
The university confirms enrollment once you have paid tuition or the required deposit through its own payment system.
Where DUO fits in, and why most Canadians will not see it
Studielink can also connect your registration to DUO , the Dutch agency that administers government study financing and public transport benefits for students. That connection only activates for students who qualify for Dutch financing, which is generally limited to EU/EEA, Swiss, and UK nationals. As a Canadian citizen without qualifying residence status, you will typically complete your Studielink and university steps without ever generating a DUO link. Do not expect a DUO account or DUO correspondence as part of a normal application.
Practical tips for the process
Register in Studielink as early as your target program allows. Selective programs need your Studielink registration in place before their earlier deadline, separate from the document deadline set by the university.
Use the same email address across Studielink and every university portal you touch, since mismatched addresses are the most common reason students lose track of a status update.
Keep a login note for each university's separate portal. You will be managing your Studielink account plus one admission portal per university you apply to.
Check your Studielink status regularly rather than waiting for email, since some updates arrive faster in the account than in your inbox.
If a program you want shows as numerus fixus (capped) inside Studielink, that program runs on a separate, earlier selection timeline than open-admission programs.
Studielink itself asks for basic identity and program information only. The real application work, document verification, and communication happens through each university's own portal once Studielink has made the introduction. If Ireland is on your shortlist too, how the CAO application works for a Canadian student is worth reading before you commit to one system over the other.
