How to Certify Employment for Public Service Loan Forgiveness

Certify your PSLF employment every year and every time you change jobs, using the PSLF Help Tool at studentaid.gov. Missing signatures, blank fields, and long gaps between certifications are the most common mistakes that delay your qualifying payment count.
📩 Use the PSLF Help Tool to generate a pre-filled Employment Certification Form
Your employer signs and dates the form, then it goes to MOHELA for processing
Certify at least once a year and immediately after any job change
Double-check your employer's EIN and your employment dates before submitting
⏱️ Review your official payment count on studentaid.gov, not just your servicer portal
Start With the PSLF Help Tool
Log in to studentaid.gov and open the PSLF Help Tool. It walks you through confirming whether your employer qualifies, checking your loan types, and generating a pre-filled Employment Certification Form (ECF) with your information already entered. Using the tool cuts down on the blank-field mistakes that come with filling out the paper form by hand.
Get Your Employer's Signature
Send the generated form to your employer for a signature. The PSLF Help Tool supports digital signatures for both you and your employer, so you can often complete this step without printing anything. Confirm your employer signs and dates the form, since an unsigned or undated ECF gets sent back and delays your certification.
Submit to MOHELA
MOHELA services all federal PSLF accounts and processes every ECF, regardless of which servicer handles your regular loan payments. Submit through the PSLF Help Tool directly, or upload the signed form to your MOHELA account. Processing confirms your qualifying payment count and updates your PSLF record on studentaid.gov.
Certify Every Year, Not Just Once
Submit a new ECF at least once a year and every time you change employers. Waiting two or three years between certifications makes it harder to track down old employer signatures and slows down processing when you finally submit. Annual certification also catches employer eligibility problems early, while you still have time to address them.
Common Mistakes That Cost You Time
Leaving fields blank instead of marking a section as not applicable
Forgetting your employer's signature or date
Getting your employer's EIN wrong, so it does not match IRS records
Leaving gaps in employment dates uncertified, so months of qualifying work go uncounted
Checking your payment count once and not again for years, missing errors while they are easy to fix
Track Your Progress
Review your PSLF payment count directly on studentaid.gov after each certification processes. Your official count lives there, even though your loan servicer's portal may show similar numbers. If your count looks wrong, contact MOHELA with your certified ECFs on hand to resolve the discrepancy before you lose more qualifying payments to a paperwork gap.
