How UK Universities Read a Quebec CEGEP DEC and Whether It Grants Advanced Standing

TL;DR

A Quebec CEGEP DEC is not automatically worth a year of UK credit. Most UK universities treat it as meeting standard entry requirements like an A-level, and only some courses grant advanced standing for a strong DEC.

  • 🎓 UK universities decide DEC value course by course, not as one Quebec-wide policy.

  • Most treat a completed pre-university DEC as standard entry, in the same range as A-levels or the IB.

  • A smaller number of courses waive a foundation year or grant advanced standing for a strong DEC.

  • Ecctis issues a formal comparability statement if a university asks for one.

How UK Universities Read a Quebec CEGEP DEC and Whether It Grants Advanced Standing

A DEC is not automatically an A-level equivalent

Quebec's two-year, pre-university Diploma of College Studies, or DEC, prepares you for direct entry into a Quebec university, a step students outside Quebec do not have. UK universities do not automatically read that extra year as a year of credit. What your DEC gets you depends on the university and the specific course you apply to.

Standard entry is the most common outcome

Most UK universities treat a completed pre-university DEC, in a Sciences, Social Science or equivalent stream, as meeting general undergraduate entry requirements, in the same range as A-levels or the IB Diploma, based on your program and course grades. You apply for standard first-year entry like any other applicant.

Your DEC gets you in, it does not shorten the degree by default.

Advanced standing is possible, but course specific

A smaller number of universities and courses look at a strong DEC, particularly one with high grades in a Sciences profile relevant to the degree, and grant advanced standing, letting you skip a foundation year or, in specific course arrangements, begin partway into the first year. This is decided course by course and university by university, never as a blanket rule for every Quebec applicant. Ask the specific admissions office in writing before you assume any credit applies.

Get a formal comparability opinion if your course asks for one

Ecctis , formerly UK NARIC, issues statements of comparability for individual international qualifications, including a Quebec DEC, for a fee. Some UK universities ask you to provide one directly when your DEC does not appear on their standard list of recognized international qualifications. Order one early if your target course's entry requirements page does not mention Quebec CEGEP transcripts specifically.

What to send with your UCAS application

Send your CEGEP transcript listing your DEC program and every course grade, with a certified translation if your university asks for one. If you are still completing your DEC at application time, ask your CEGEP for a letter confirming your expected completion date and predicted grades, since UCAS deadlines fall well before most DEC results are final.

If a course only lists A-levels or the IB

Some entry requirements pages list A-level and IB grades and stay silent on Quebec qualifications entirely. That does not close the course to you. Contact the admissions office and ask how it reads a DEC alongside your specific course grades, rather than assuming the published grid is the full picture.

DEC applicants are not read the same way as other Canadian provinces

Ontario, BC and Alberta applicants get compared against a Grade 12 overall average and named senior courses. A DEC applicant gets compared against a two-year college credential instead, so do not use another province's published average as a guide for how your DEC will be read.
