IB Diploma Credit at US Universities: What Canadian IB Graduates Should Expect

By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 19, 2026 • Canadians Studying Abroad

TL;DR

US universities award IB credit mainly for Higher Level exams, usually a 5, 6 or 7, and rarely for Standard Level. This differs from the BC, Ontario and Alberta dual diploma track, where you earn your provincial high school diploma and the IB Diploma together, with no US-style credit-per-score system involved.

  • 🎓 Most US credit policies look only at Higher Level (HL) scores, not Standard Level (SL).

  • A 5 is a common minimum where credit is offered. Several schools set the bar at 6 or 7.

  • The full IB Diploma supports admission on its own, separate from any per-exam credit.

  • Check each university's own IB credit chart. Policies differ as much as they do for AP.

IB Diploma Credit at US Universities: What Canadian IB Graduates Should Expect

How US universities treat IB scores

Most US universities that grant IB credit look only at Higher Level (HL) exam scores. Standard Level (SL) scores rarely earn credit, even at schools generous with AP or HL credit. A score of 5 is a common minimum where credit is offered at all, and several universities set a higher bar of 6 or 7 for competitive subjects like HL Math or HL Sciences.

Policy varies by university and by subject, the same way AP credit does. Two schools with similar admissions selectivity often treat an HL 5 in the same subject in opposite ways, so confirm the exact chart for each school on your list rather than assume a standard rule applies everywhere.

Diploma credit versus dual diploma

A Canadian student at an IB World School in British Columbia, Ontario or Alberta usually earns two credentials at once: the provincial high school diploma (the BC Dogwood, the Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or the Alberta High School Diploma) and the IB Diploma. This dual diploma is a graduation credential, arranged between your school board and the IB. It has nothing to do with whether a US university later grants course credit for individual HL exam scores.

Keep these two systems separate. Finishing the dual diploma track secures your Canadian high school graduation and your IB Diploma together. It does not guarantee any specific US university will grant credit hours for your HL scores. Those are two different decisions, made by two different bodies.

How many HL scores you are actually bringing

The IB Diploma requires three or four subjects at Higher Level, with the remainder at Standard Level (most students take three HL and three SL, though four HL is permitted), plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Most Canadian IB graduates bring three HL scores into a US university's credit review (a smaller number bring four), not six. Compare that number against how many credit-bearing subjects your target school actually lists before assuming a large credit total.

Most Canadian IB schools sit the May exam session, with final scores released in early July. Build your US enrollment and course registration plans around that July release date, since a school cannot confirm exact credit until it has your official IB transcript.

What actually earns credit at a US university

  • The full IB Diploma, not single exams, supports your admission profile as a marker of a demanding course load.

  • Individual HL exam scores, typically 5 and up, are what most universities' credit charts key on.

  • SL scores occasionally earn credit at less selective schools, but never assume this without checking.

  • Some universities grant a flat block of credit for completing the full diploma with a strong overall score, on top of any per-exam credit.

Before you finalize your college list

  1. Pull up each target university's IB credit policy page directly.

  2. Check whether it lists HL only, or HL and SL both.

  3. Note the score threshold for each subject you are taking at HL.

  4. Ask your IB coordinator whether the school has placed graduates at that university before, and what credit those students actually received.

  5. Keep your final IB transcript ready to submit once results are released in July.

Treat published credit charts as a starting point, not a guarantee. Confirm details with the registrar's office directly if your target subjects are not listed clearly.

IB credit compared with AP credit

US universities generally treat a strong IB HL score similarly to a strong AP score for credit purposes, though the two programs use different scales. AP runs 1 to 5, IB HL runs 1 to 7, and a university's credit chart lists each separately rather than converting one scale into the other. A Canadian student with both an IB Diploma and one or two AP exams from the same high school should check both charts independently, since a strong result on one exam type does not guarantee an equivalent result on the credit chart for the other.

Where the dual diploma track runs in Canada

British Columbia, Ontario and Alberta each authorize IB World Schools that combine the full IB Diploma with the province's own graduation diploma inside the same timetable. Not every high school in these provinces offers this combined track, and availability depends on which schools your local board has authorized as IB World Schools. Confirm authorized-school status and program structure directly with your own school's IB coordinator rather than assuming every high school in your province runs the same combined model.

Timing your applications around IB results

Because official May-session IB results arrive in July, most US universities accept predicted IB scores at the application stage and confirm final credit only after your real transcript arrives. Send your official IB transcript to each university as soon as it is available, since some credit decisions and course registration holds do not clear until the university has that final document in hand.

Ask your IB coordinator for contact details of the university's own transfer credit or registrar office if a school's website chart does not list your specific HL subjects. A short email before enrollment saves a longer correction process after you arrive on campus.
