What the ICAG Qualification Involves

The Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG) is Ghana's accounting regulator and professional body. To use the title Chartered Accountant in Ghana, you pass ICAG's exams and complete supervised practical experience, then apply for membership.

Entry Requirements

You need to be at least 16 years old and hold WASSCE, SSSCE or an equivalent qualification to register as an ICAG student, according to ICAG's student registration guidance . Degree holders in accounting-related fields from accredited universities can apply for exemptions on some Level 1 and Level 2 papers, cutting the number of exams you need to sit.

Exam Levels and Structure

You can log this experience while you are still sitting papers, so the exam and experience clocks often run together instead of one after the other.

ICAG Versus a University Accounting Degree Alone

A university degree in accounting or business administration gives you the theory but not the chartered title on its own. Holding a relevant accredited degree typically earns you exemptions on some ICAG Level 1 and Level 2 papers, so most students treat the degree as a head start into ICAG rather than an alternative to it. Students without an accounting background start from Level 1 and sit every paper, which takes longer but still leads to the same chartered status at the end.

ICAG Versus ACCA in Ghana

ACCA is available in Ghana through registered tuition providers and gives you a qualification recognized well beyond West Africa, which matters if you plan to work for a multinational or move abroad. ICAG costs less at every stage and is the qualification Ghanaian regulators, the Ghana Revenue Authority and most local firms expect for statutory sign-off work. Many Ghanaian accounting students sit both: a relevant accounting degree can earn exemptions from ICAG and separately from ACCA, so check both exemption lists rather than assuming they overlap.

How Long It Takes

Students studying part-time while working typically complete all three ICAG levels in three to five years, faster if a relevant degree earns exemptions on early papers. The three-year practical experience requirement often finishes around the same time as the exams if you start your training role early, so the two rarely stretch your total timeline much beyond five years even for candidates starting from scratch.

Which Route to Choose

Pick ICAG if you plan to build your career inside Ghana, want the lower cost, or need chartered status for a role that specifically requires it, such as public sector audit. Pick ACCA if you want a qualification that transfers cleanly outside Ghana or you are targeting a multinational employer. Whichever you choose, register your practical experience early. Delaying it is the main reason qualification drags past three years for many candidates.
