IELTS Academic and IELTS for UKVI use the same test content, timing and scoring. The only real differences are the test centre approval, the certificate label and where each version gets accepted.

Same test, different purpose
IELTS Academic and IELTS for UKVI Academic test the same four skills with the same question types, timing and difficulty. Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking sections are identical, and the 0-9 band score is calculated the same way for both. IDP IELTS confirms the two versions share content, format and scoring.
The difference sits outside the test itself. IELTS for UKVI must run at a centre that meets extra security requirements set by the UK Home Office, and the Test Report Form (TRF) you receive carries a UKVI label. A standard IELTS TRF from the same centre, on the same day, does not carry that label and does not work as a substitute for it.

When you need the UKVI version
Most UK universities hold Student sponsor status, which lets them assess your English proficiency directly through your application, an interview or a standard Academic IELTS score. If your offer letter or Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) does not mention a Secure English Language Test, a normal Academic score covers your application.
You need IELTS for UKVI when the Home Office requires independent proof of English for your visa route, or when your university tells you directly to submit SELT evidence with your CAS. Read your offer letter before you book. A wrong booking wastes the test fee, since a standard TRF does not count as SELT evidence.
IELTS for UKVI also comes in General Training and Life Skills versions, sat by applicants on work, family or settlement routes rather than a Student visa. Gov.uk lists which SELT each visa route accepts.
Choosing the right test before you book
Applying to universities in Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Canada or elsewhere outside the UK: book standard IELTS Academic.
Applying to a UK university that assesses English itself: book standard IELTS Academic unless told otherwise.

Booking in Southeast Asia
British Council and IDP run both versions at their IELTS centres across the region. When you book online, IELTS for UKVI shows as a separate product from standard Academic, with its own date list and fee. Confirm the version and centre approval status on your local ielts.org or IDP page before you pay.
Mistakes that cost applicants time and money
The most common error is booking standard IELTS Academic when a CAS already asks for SELT evidence. The test fee does not transfer between versions, so you pay again for the correct one. Read your CAS requirements before you book, not after you get a result you cannot use.
A second common error is booking IELTS for UKVI at a centre that only administers the standard version on your chosen date. Not every British Council or IDP centre in Southeast Asia runs the UKVI product every day it offers standard IELTS, so confirm centre approval and the exact date before you pay, rather than assuming any local centre covers both.
Results timing is the same either way
Result turnaround does not change based on which version you sit. Computer-delivered centres typically return results within a matter of days, while paper-based centres take about two weeks, regardless of whether you sat standard Academic or the UKVI version. Build your application timeline around your centre's delivery mode, not around which version of IELTS you booked.
A SELT is one part of your visa evidence
When your Student visa route requires a SELT, the test result is one piece of evidence among several the Home Office reviews, alongside your CAS, financial evidence and course details. Passing the English requirement does not replace the other evidence your application needs. Keeping track of your Test Report Form
Your TRF becomes available online through your IELTS account before the physical copy arrives, and it stays valid for 2 years from your test date for both the standard and UKVI versions. Universities and visa authorities each set their own rule on how recent a score needs to be within that 2-year window, so check both the test's own validity and your specific application's timing rule.
