How the retake works
IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) lets you resit one section of the test rather than sitting all four again. You sit the full computer-delivered IELTS first. If one section score falls short of what you need, you book a retake for that section alone within 60 days of the original test, according to ielts.org .
Your retake result arrives in 3-5 days and gets combined with your original scores from the other three sections into a new Test Report Form. You keep the original TRF as well, so you decide which one to submit depending on which set of scores works better for your application.
Where it is available
OSR now runs in more than 110 countries at computer-delivered IELTS centres, with new countries added most months, according to the British Council FAQ page . It is not available in the United States. Coverage across ASEAN depends on whether your local centre runs computer delivery, since OSR does not work at paper-based centres.
Thailand moved to full computer delivery in March 2026, and British Council Thailand lists OSR as included at no added cost for computer-delivered bookings there. Fees and availability differ by country, so confirm OSR is offered before you rely on it as a backup plan.
When OSR actually helps
Only one section missed your target band while the other three met or beat it.
Your application deadline is close enough that a full four-section retake would not fit your timeline.
Your target university or visa route has confirmed it accepts a combined TRF, not only a single-sitting score.
OSR does not help when two or more sections fall short, since you can only retake one skill per booking. In that case a full retake gives a cleaner result and avoids submitting a TRF built from two different sittings.
Check acceptance before you book
Universities and visa authorities each decide for themselves whether they accept an OSR-combined TRF or require a score from one sitting. Some institutions still ask for a single test date. Email your university's admissions office or check your visa route's official guidance before you pay for a retake, so the version you end up with actually gets accepted.

Log in to your account with the same provider, British Council or IDP, you used for the original test.
Select the section you want to resit and confirm the date falls within 60 days of your original test.
Pay the retake fee, set by your local centre and separate from the full test fee.
Sit the retake at a computer-delivered centre, since OSR does not run at paper-based centres.

Does OSR cost less than a full retake
