IELTS, TOEFL, or Cambridge English: Choosing the Right Certificate for English-Taught Programs in Europe

TL;DR

IELTS, TOEFL iBT, and Cambridge C1 Advanced are the three certificates most European universities accept for English-taught programs. They differ mainly in format, validity period, and how directly the score maps to a CEFR level.

  • 🎓 IELTS Band 6.5-7.0 lines up with CEFR B2-C1, the range most bachelor's and master's programs ask for.

  • ⏱️ IELTS scores are usually treated as valid for 2 years, while Cambridge English certificates never expire.

  • 📩 ETS overhauled the TOEFL iBT scoring scale in January 2026, so recent TOEFL scores are not directly comparable to older TOEFL or IELTS results.

  • 💶 Cambridge C1 Advanced is graded 122-210, with 180+ counted as a pass at C1 level.

IELTS, TOEFL, or Cambridge English: Choosing the Right Certificate for English-Taught Programs in Europe

Three tests, one goal

European universities that teach in English almost always ask for proof of your English level if it is not your first language or the language of your previous education. IELTS, TOEFL iBT, and Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) are the three certificates accepted most widely, and most university admissions pages list minimum scores for all three side by side. Pick based on which one your target universities list, and which format suits how you test.

IELTS

IELTS Academic is scored on a 9-band scale and maps to CEFR levels this way, according to IELTS's own comparison guidance : Band 5.5-6.5 sits around CEFR B2, and Band 7.0-7.5 sits around CEFR C1. Most bachelor's programs ask for somewhere in the 6.0-6.5 range, and competitive master's programs often ask for 6.5-7.0.

IELTS results are generally treated as valid for 2 years by universities and immigration authorities, so a score from your final year of school is usually still current if you apply the following year, but check the specific validity window your target university states.

TOEFL iBT

TOEFL iBT is delivered fully online and tests reading, listening, speaking, and writing in a single sitting. In January 2026, ETS introduced a redesigned scoring scale, moving to a 1-6 scale in 0.5 increments built to align more directly with CEFR levels. According to ETS's own update notice , scores from tests taken after the change should not be assumed directly comparable to older TOEFL scores or to IELTS bands using older concordance tables.

If you are applying with a TOEFL score, confirm with your target university whether they have updated their minimum score requirement for the new scale, since older published thresholds on university websites may still reference the pre-2026 scoring system.

Cambridge C1 Advanced

Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) is scored on a 122-210 scale. A score of 180-199 is a grade C, the minimum pass, 200-209 is grade B, and 210 or above is grade A, with very high scorers awarded a C2-level result on the same certificate. Cambridge English exams never expire once issued, which sets them apart from IELTS and makes CAE a practical option if you are testing well ahead of your application.

Because the certificate is fixed at C1 (or C2 for the higher exam), it works best when a university's requirement matches your actual level closely. If a program's minimum sits in the middle of the B2 range, an IELTS or TOEFL score that can land at exactly that threshold may suit you better than an exam built around a single CEFR level.

Check the exact certificate and score your target university lists before booking, since acceptance varies by country and by program, and some universities accept only one or two of the three even though all three are common across Europe overall.
