IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration: What ASEAN Applicants Need to Book

A UK Student visa needs a Secure English Language Test (SELT) only when your university does not assess your English itself. When you do need one, it must come from an approved provider, not a standard IELTS test.

Not every Student visa applicant needs a SELT
Most UK universities hold Student sponsor status, which lets them assess your English proficiency directly, through your application, an interview, or a standard Academic IELTS score you already hold. If your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) does not mention a Secure English Language Test, you do not need to book one for your visa.
You need a SELT when your Home Office application specifically requires independent proof of English, or when your university tells you to submit SELT evidence with your CAS. Read your CAS carefully rather than assuming either way, since the requirement depends on your course and your sponsor, not on your nationality alone.

A standard IELTS Academic certificate, taken outside this SELT structure, is not accepted for visa or immigration purposes. If your CAS asks for SELT evidence, book specifically through one of these providers at an approved centre, not a regular IELTS or PTE test.
What level you need
The required CEFR level depends on your course level. Below-degree courses, including foundation and pre-sessional English programmes, need B1 or higher. Bachelor's, Master's and PhD courses need B2 or higher. Your test must cover reading, writing, speaking and listening together. A speaking-and-listening-only test like IELTS Life Skills does not meet the Student visa requirement.
Booking and validity
SELT results stay valid for 2 years from the date the test is awarded, provided you sat it at an approved centre. Book through the IELTS SELT Consortium (British Council or IDP) for IELTS for UKVI, since not every British Council or IDP centre in Southeast Asia runs the UKVI version on every date.
Providers update their test lineup from time to time. LanguageCert replaced its ESOL SELT four-skills test with two new versions from 6 July 2025, and results issued before that date stay valid for their original 2-year period. Check the gov.uk approved list before you book, since only tests on that current list count for your visa application.
How ASEAN applicants book a SELT
IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills run through the IELTS SELT Consortium, delivered locally by British Council and IDP centres across Southeast Asia. Not every centre runs the UKVI product on every date it offers standard IELTS, so confirm the specific date carries UKVI approval before you pay, rather than assuming any local IELTS centre covers it automatically.
Book early enough that your result arrives well before your visa application window opens. A SELT is one piece of evidence in your Student visa application alongside your CAS and financial evidence, so plan its timing around your full application rather than treating it as a last-minute step.
If your test expires or you have not booked one in time
A SELT older than 2 years does not count as valid evidence, so check your test date against your visa application date before you submit. If your university tells you late that a SELT applies to your case and you have not sat one, this can delay your CAS confirmation and push back your visa application. Ask your university's international office as soon as you receive your offer whether a SELT applies to you, rather than waiting until close to your intended start date.
Comparing the approved providers
All five approved SELT providers test the same four skills at the same CEFR levels, so the choice mostly comes down to which test format suits you and which provider runs a centre near you in Southeast Asia. IELTS for UKVI remains the most widely available option across the region through British Council and IDP. Pearson's PTE Academic UKVI and Trinity's ISE run in fewer ASEAN cities, so check centre availability before you build a preparation plan around one specific test.
