How to Get Into University in Indonesia: Requirements, Exams and Deadlines
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 07, 2026 • Study in Southeast Asia
Indonesian students reach a public university through three main routes: SNBP (school achievement, no test), SNBT (national UTBK test), or Jalur Mandiri (each university's own selection). Only one of SNBP or SNBT can lead to a first offer in the same year, so plan which route fits your record before the application windows open.
🎓 SNBP: based on report card rank, your school nominates eligible students
📩 SNBT: sit the UTBK test, open to any final-year or recent graduate who meets the age rule
💵 UTBK 2026 registration fee: Rp 200,000
⏱️ If you accept an SNBP or SNBT offer, you cannot sit next year's SNBT
Jalur Mandiri runs after SNBT results, on each university's own schedule and fee
Three routes into a public university
Public universities (PTN) in Indonesia fill their seats through three parallel routes, and most students try more than one. Private universities and PTKIN institutions run separate admission processes on their own schedules, often accepting UTBK scores alongside their own entrance tests.
| Route | Basis | Who applies |
|---|---|---|
| SNBP | School report card and achievement record | Nominated final-year students at eligible schools |
| SNBT | UTBK national test score | Final-year students and recent graduates |
| Jalur Mandiri | Each university's own test or criteria | Anyone meeting that university's requirements |
SNBP: the achievement-based route
SNBP (Seleksi Nasional Berdasarkan Prestasi) selects students using their academic record instead of a test. Your school submits your grades and profile through PDSS (Pangkalan Data Sekolah dan Siswa), and only students nominated by their school within that school's quota can apply. Schools need active, verified accreditation in the national system for their students to take part, so ask your school counselor early whether your school participates and how many students it can nominate that year.
SNBP runs at large scale nationally. For the 2026 intake, 806,242 students applied for 189,017 seats across 146 public universities, with official results announced on 31 March 2026 through the SNPMB portal. Because seats are limited relative to applicants, rank your program choices realistically, putting your strongest match first rather than only aspirational choices.
SNBT: the test-based route
SNBT (Seleksi Nasional Berdasarkan Tes) uses your score on the UTBK (Ujian Tulis Berbasis Komputer), a computer-based national test covering a Scholastic Potential Test (general reasoning and knowledge) and a Literacy Test (Indonesian, English, and mathematical reasoning). This route stays open to any final-year student or recent graduate who meets the year's eligibility rules, not only students nominated by their school, which makes it the main route for students who missed SNBP or want a second shot at a preferred university.
For the UTBK-SNBT 2026 cycle , the schedule ran as follows: SNPMB account registration from 12 January to 7 April 2026, UTBK-SNBT registration from 25 March to 8 April 2026, the test itself from 21 to 30 April 2026, results announced 25 May 2026, and score certificates available for download from 2 June to 31 July 2026. The registration fee for 2026 was Rp 200,000 per participant. Students who already accepted a place through SNBP in 2024, 2025, or 2026 could not register for SNBT 2026, so decide which route to commit to before results come out, not after.
Exact dates shift a little each year, so confirm the current cycle's schedule on the official SNPMB portal rather than relying on a previous year's calendar.
Preparing for UTBK
The Scholastic Potential Test section measures general reasoning, quantitative thinking, and knowledge rather than a fixed school syllabus, so past-year practice questions help more than re-reading textbooks close to the test date. The Literacy Test section checks reading comprehension in Indonesian and English plus applied mathematical reasoning, testing how you use information rather than memorized formulas. Build a study schedule around timed practice sets in the months leading up to the test, since time pressure, not only knowledge, decides a large share of your final score.
Jalur Mandiri: each university's own selection
After SNBT results come out, universities open Jalur Mandiri, their own independent admission track. Each PTN sets its own test format, fee, quota, and timeline, and some accept your existing UTBK score instead of a separate test. Mandiri seats often cost more than SNBP or SNBT-based enrollment, since some universities charge an additional development contribution on top of standard tuition for students admitted this way. Check your target university's official admission page directly for its Mandiri requirements and fee structure, since these vary widely between institutions and are not standardized nationally.
Applying to private and PTKIN institutions
Private universities (PTS) and state Islamic institutions (PTKIN) run their own admission calendars, independent of the SNBP and SNBT national timeline. Many PTS accept UTBK scores as one entry option alongside their own placement test or direct interview-based admission, and several accept rolling applications across multiple intakes a year rather than a single national deadline. PTKIN institutions often run a parallel national selection similar in structure to SNBP and SNBT but administered separately, so check with your target Islamic university directly for its specific track and dates.
If you miss a route or a seat
Missing SNBP is not the end of your options, since SNBT stays open to any eligible final-year student or graduate regardless of school nomination. If SNBT does not place you in your target program either, Jalur Mandiri and private university admission remain open, often with later deadlines that give you time to reassess your program list. Some students also take a gap year to retake UTBK the following cycle, which is common enough that many tutoring centers run year-round UTBK preparation classes built around this exact plan.
Planning your application year
Confirm your school's SNBP quota and PDSS status in your final year, not at the last minute
Register early for a UTBK SNPMB account, since account setup opens months before the test
Keep a backup list of Mandiri or private options in case SNBP and SNBT do not work out
Check each route's document requirements (report cards, ID, photos) well before its deadline
Verify every date on the official SNPMB or university page, since national schedules shift year to year
