How University Admission Works in Ivory Coast

The baccalauréat opens the door

Your route into a university in Ivory Coast starts with the baccalauréat (BAC), the national secondary school exit exam. You cannot register at a public university without a validated BAC, and your result together with your BAC series decide which faculty you can join.

The Ministry of National Education runs and grades the BAC. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MESRS) takes over once you hold the diploma, overseeing university admission, program accreditation, and student services across the country.

Your BAC series sets your options

Ivory Coast follows a French-style BAC system, with separate series for literary, economic and social, and scientific tracks. A science-heavy series opens access to medicine, engineering, pharmacy, and the hard sciences. A literary or economic and social series routes you toward law, humanities, management, and social science faculties.

Check the entry requirements of your target UFR (Unité de Formation et de Recherche, the faculty-level unit inside each university) before you finish secondary school. Some programs, health sciences in particular, add a minimum grade on top of holding the right series.

How public university placement works

Public university spots in Ivory Coast are allocated centrally rather than through a walk-in application to each campus. Once you have your BAC result, you register through the national orientation process run by MESRS, listing your preferred university and program. Placement runs on your series, your grade, and available capacity at each UFR.

Ivory Coast has five main public universities: Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Cocody, Abidjan, the oldest and largest, founded in 1959, Université Nangui Abrogoua also in Abidjan, Université Alassane Ouattara in Bouéké, Université Peleforo Gon Coulibaly in Korhogo, and Université Jean Lorougnon Guédé in Daloa. Demand for the flagship Abidjan campuses runs high: Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny was originally built for about 30,000 students but held around 65,000 by 2015, according to university figures . A new campus at Bingerville, inaugurated in October 2025, added space for about 15,000 more students and eased some of that pressure.

Because the flagship campuses fill fast, placement sometimes sends you to a regional university in Bouéké, Korhogo, or Daloa even if you listed an Abidjan campus first.

The competitive route: grandes écoles and concours

Alongside the university track, Ivory Coast runs a parallel system of grandes écoles that train engineers, managers, and technicians through a competitive entrance exam, the concours, rather than automatic placement. The Institut National Polytechnique Félix Houphouët-Boigny (INP-HB) in Yamoussoukro is the best known, with separate schools for engineering, agronomy, mining, and business. A concours seat is harder to secure than a standard university placement, so prepare with past papers and, where offered, a preparatory year.

Typical admission timeline

The BAC exam runs mid-year, with results published over the following weeks. Registration and orientation for public universities open shortly after results, so track announcements from your school and the ministry closely. Grandes écoles concours dates are set separately by each school and often fall before the main university registration window, since they need time to run written and oral tests.

Documents you need to register

• Application or registration form for your chosen university

Private universities and grandes écoles may ask for extra documents, such as a motivation letter or an entrance exam fee. Confirm the exact list with your target institution, since requirements shift between schools and intakes.

If you miss your first-choice spot

• Accept placement at a regional public university rather than repeat the year, then transfer later if your school allows it

• Apply directly to a private university, most of which run their own admission process on a rolling basis

• Register for a BTS (Brevet de Technicien Supérieur) track at a technical institute, a shorter and more accessible qualification

• Resit weak BAC subjects the following session if your series or grade blocked your target program

Whichever path you take, confirm the program holds recognized accreditation before you commit. Ivory Coast belongs to CAMES (Conseil Africain et Malgache pour l'Enseignement Supérieur), the regional body that validates degrees across French-speaking Africa, so a CAMES-recognized qualification transfers more easily to jobs and further study elsewhere in the region.
