How Jalur Mandiri Admission Works and What Uang Pangkal Really Costs
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 07, 2026 • Money & Budgeting, Study in Southeast Asia
Jalur Mandiri is the admission route each Indonesian public university runs on its own, after SNBP and SNBT results come out. Many mandiri students also pay uang pangkal, a one-time upfront fee, though a handful of top PTN dropped this charge for 2025.
Each PTN sets its own mandiri test, criteria, and quota
Uang pangkal (officially IPI) is separate from your regular per-semester UKT tuition
The amount differs by university and study program and changes yearly
UI, UGM, Unsri, UT, ITS, and all PTKIN ran 2025 jalur mandiri intakes without uang pangkal
Confirm the exact fee on your target university's own admission page before you commit
What Jalur Mandiri is
Jalur Mandiri is the third admission route into Indonesian public universities, alongside SNBP (achievement-based) and SNBT (test-based). Where SNBP and SNBT run as one national system through SNPMB , jalur mandiri is set entirely by each individual PTN. The university decides its own test format, selection criteria, application dates, and how many seats it opens through this route.
Universities run jalur mandiri after SNBP and SNBT results come out, so it fills the seats that remain once the two national routes admit their students. Some PTN accept your UTBK score from SNBT as your mandiri application score. Others hold a separate written or computer-based test, Ujian Mandiri, with its own registration and exam day. A few combine report card review with an interview or portfolio, depending on the study program.
Why mandiri criteria vary so much between universities
Because each PTN designs its own jalur mandiri, the criteria, quota, and cost differ across campuses and even across faculties at the same campus. A popular medicine or engineering program at a top PTN sets a higher bar and a different fee structure than a less competitive humanities program at the same university. Read your target university's own admission page rather than assuming another PTN's process applies, since there is no single national rulebook for this route the way there is for SNBP and SNBT.
What uang pangkal actually is
Uang pangkal is a one-time payment due when you enroll, on top of UKT, the per-semester tuition every student pays regardless of admission route. Its official name is Iuran Pengembangan Institusi (IPI), Institutional Development Contribution. In most cases only jalur mandiri admits pay it. Students who enter through SNBP or SNBT typically pay UKT only, without an additional upfront charge.
The amount is not fixed nationally. Each PTN sets its own uang pangkal figure, and the figure differs by study program within the same university, then changes from year to year. Because of that spread, do not rely on a figure you saw for a different intake year or a different program. Check your specific university and program's current admission page for the number that applies to you.
PTN that dropped uang pangkal in 2025
Cost pressure on jalur mandiri pushed some PTN to remove uang pangkal from at least part of their 2025 intake. Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Sriwijaya, Universitas Terbuka, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, and every Perguruan Tinggi Keagamaan Islam Negeri (PTKIN) ran 2025 jalur mandiri admission without charging uang pangkal, according to Kompas .
The waiver does not always cover every seat at these universities. Some apply it to their whole mandiri intake, while others limit it to a specific UKT tier or a specific study program. Confirm the exact scope on the university's own announcement before you count on a seat free of uang pangkal.
Finding accurate cost information
Uang pangkal amounts live on each university's own admission website rather than in one central national listing. Search directly for your target university's name with "uang pangkal jalur mandiri" and the intake year, alongside the specific study program you want. The admission office and the official social media accounts of the university's biro akademik (academic bureau) also publish updated figures once the campus finalizes its mandiri intake terms.
Before you apply through jalur mandiri
Compare your target PTN's mandiri quota and past accepted scores against SNBT, since a competitive program admits far fewer students through mandiri.
Budget for uang pangkal as a real cost unless your specific university and program confirms a waiver in writing.
Ask whether your university's mandiri route accepts your existing UTBK score or requires a separate test, so you do not miss a second exam registration window.
Check if your household income qualifies you for a lower UKT tier or a uang pangkal waiver category, since these exist at some PTN independent of the 2025 policy above.
