JUPEB Explained: How the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board Route Works

What JUPEB is

The Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) runs a one year programme that stands in for the UK A Level system inside Nigeria. A consortium of universities led by the University of Lagos set it up, and the Federal Government approved it in December 2013 under the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act. JUPEB is recognised at more than 40 percent of Nigeria's federal, state and private universities, according to JUPEB .

Instead of writing UTME and starting from 100 level, you sit the JUPEB examination after a year of study and enter your university of choice at 200 level through Direct Entry. This route works well if your WAEC or NECO results are solid but your UTME score falls short of your course cut off mark, or if you finished secondary school and want a faster path into a specific department.

How the programme runs

You register at a JUPEB-accredited study centre, most of which sit inside or close to a partner university. Classes run for about nine months and cover three subjects relevant to your intended course. A science student aiming for Medicine, for example, typically studies Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

You need five O Level credits, including English Language and Mathematics, from WAEC, NECO or NABTEB in not more than two sittings before you register. Centres also run entrance tests or interviews of their own.

Grading and points

JUPEB grades each subject A to F. A is worth 5 points, B 4, C 3, D 2, E 1, and F scores zero, based on the JUPEB grading scale . With three subjects, the maximum score is 15 points, plus a bonus point when none of the three grades is an F, bringing the maximum obtainable score to 16.

Each university sets its own minimum score for Direct Entry, and the bar moves by course. Competitive programmes such as Medicine at the University of Lagos or the University of Ibadan ask for scores close to the maximum 16 points, while less competitive courses accept lower totals. Check your target department's Direct Entry brochure before you pick subjects, since the combination has to match the course.

Which universities accept JUPEB

JUPEB centres exist at universities including the University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, Covenant University, Lagos State University, University of Benin and dozens of others across federal, state and private categories. If a course does not appear among a centre's approved combinations, admission through that centre will not work for it, so confirm with the centre before you register.

Fees and registration

Fees differ by centre, subject combination, and location, and most centres allow payment in installments. Contact your chosen centre directly or check the JUPEB portal for current charges before you commit.

How to apply

1. Shortlist universities that run JUPEB and check which one offers your target course.

2. Confirm the O Level requirements and subject combination for that course.

3. Register at an accredited centre attached to that university, sit any entrance test the centre sets, and pay the fees.

4. Attend classes for the academic session and sit the JUPEB examination.

5. Use your result slip to apply for Direct Entry into 200 level through JAMB's Direct Entry portal.

JUPEB compared to IJMB

JUPEB and the Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) programme both lead to Direct Entry, but universities pick one or the other, rarely both. UNILAG, UI, OAU, Covenant University and LASU run JUPEB and do not accept IJMB, while a separate group of over 100 universities accepts IJMB instead. Confirm which board your target university recognises before you register for either.

Who this route suits

JUPEB suits students who already hold strong O Level results but missed their UTME cut off mark, students who want a guaranteed path into a specific department, and students returning to education after a gap. It costs more than the standard UTME route and adds a year before you start 100 level work, so weigh it against retaking UTME if your score fell just short of the cut off.

Typical subject combinations

Your three subjects need to match your intended course, and centres publish an approved combination list for each department they support. Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing candidates typically combine Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics. Engineering and Computer Science candidates lean on Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Law, Mass Communication and most Social Science courses accept combinations built around Literature, Government, Economics or CRS/IRS alongside a general subject like Mathematics or English Literature. Confirm the exact combination your target department accepts before you register, since a mismatch means you cannot use your result for Direct Entry into that course.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not register for a centre before confirming it runs an approved combination for your target course, since transferring later is difficult once classes start. Do not assume every university that runs a JUPEB centre accepts every course through Direct Entry, since some faculties, particularly Medicine and Law at certain universities, cap Direct Entry admissions tightly regardless of your JUPEB score. Keep your O Level result slip and JUPEB result together when you apply for Direct Entry, since universities check both.
