What Cluster Subjects Are
KUCCPS groups Kenyan university degree programmes into clusters, each cluster tied to a specific set of four KCSE subjects relevant to that field of study. A programme in Cluster 13 for Medicine and Health Sciences pulls its four subjects from Mathematics or Physics, English or Kiswahili, Chemistry and Biology, while a Cluster 5 Engineering programme pulls from Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and English.
Your cluster subjects are not the same four subjects for every programme you apply to. KUCCPS recalculates a fresh set of four subjects, and a fresh cluster point score, for every single programme on your application list.
The Weighted Cluster Points Formula
KUCCPS calculates your weighted cluster points with this formula: C = [√(r/R x t/T)] x 48.
r: the sum of your grade points in the 4 cluster subjects for that specific programme
R: 48, the maximum possible points across 4 subjects
t: your total KCSE grade points across all subjects sat
T: 84, the maximum possible overall KCSE grade points
KNEC grades convert to points on a 12-point scale: A=12, A-=11, B+=10, B=9, B-=8, C+=7, C=6, C-=5, D+=4, D=3, D-=2, E=1. According to KUCCPS cluster point guidance , the resulting score runs on the same 0 to 48 scale as the maximum cluster subject total, computed to three decimal places to reduce ties between applicants.
A Worked Example
Suppose you scored A- in Mathematics, B+ in Physics, B in Chemistry and B+ in English, with an overall KCSE grade point total of 66 out of 84. Convert each grade: A-=11, B+=10, B=9, B+=10, giving r=40.
Plug the numbers into the formula: C = [√(40/48 x 66/84)] x 48, which works out to about 38.8 cluster points for that specific programme, out of a maximum 48. A student with the same overall 66 points but weaker science grades scores lower than this on the same Engineering cluster, even with an identical mean grade.
Why the Same Mean Grade Gives Different Cluster Points
Two students with an identical KCSE mean grade, say a B plain, land on different cluster points for the same degree programme. The formula does not run on your mean grade alone, it runs on the specific four subjects that programme's cluster pulls from your result.
A student with strong grades concentrated in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and English scores higher cluster points for an Engineering programme than a student with the same mean grade built from strong Arts subjects and weaker sciences. The overall KCSE aggregate (t) affects both students equally, but the cluster-specific subject total (r) does not.
This is also why your cluster points change from one programme to another on your own application. Your Medicine cluster points come from a different four-subject mix than your Business or Education cluster points, even though every calculation draws from the same underlying KCSE certificate.
