LLB graduates in Kenya join the Advocates Training Programme at Kenya School of Law for 12 months of teaching plus 6 months of pupillage before admission to the bar.
🎓 You need an LLB from a recognized university plus a C+ mean grade and a B plain in English or Kiswahili at KCSE for direct entry.
Graduates with lower KCSE grades qualify by passing the Pre-Bar Examination instead.
💵 Programme fees total about Ksh 145,000, with a Ksh 2,000 non-refundable application fee.
⏱️ The programme runs about 18 months in total: 12 months of coursework and 6 months of pupillage.
What the Advocates Training Programme Is
The Advocates Training Programme (ATP) at the Kenya School of Law (KSL) is the mandatory professional stage between an LLB and admission as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. It runs under the framework set by the Council of Legal Education.
An LLB alone does not let you practice law in Kenya. The ATP is where you learn the practical skills, procedure and professional conduct a law degree does not fully cover (Kenya School of Law ).
Who Can Apply
Your eligibility route depends on when you started your LLB. If you were admitted to your LLB programme after 8 December 2014, you need a mean grade of C+ (plus) at KCSE, with at least a B (plain) in English or Kiswahili, alongside your LLB.
If you do not meet this KCSE threshold but hold a C- (minus) in English and a C- aggregate at KCSE, you still qualify by sitting and passing the Pre-Bar Examination set by KSL (Kenya School of Law ATP FAQs ). This route matters for students who did not hit the direct-entry KCSE bar but completed a recognized LLB regardless.
Application Fees and Costs
KSL charges a non-refundable application fee of Ksh 2,000.
Once admitted, the total programme fee for the Advocates Training Programme sits around Ksh 145,000 (KSL ATP fee guidance ).
Budget separately for study materials, transport for your pupillage placement, and living costs, since this fee figure covers tuition rather than your full cost for the programme.
Programme Structure
The ATP runs about 18 months in total. The first 12 months are classroom-based training at a KSL campus, covering subjects like civil litigation, criminal litigation, probate and administration, legal writing and drafting, and professional ethics. The final 6 months are pupillage, where you work under a practicing advocate to get supervised, hands-on legal experience before you qualify.
Application Timing
KSL runs one main intake cycle a year.
For the 2026/2027 academic year, the programme was scheduled to start on 9 February 2026, with applications closing 31 October 2025 (Kenya School of Law admissions notice ).
Intake dates shift slightly year to year, so confirm the current cycle's deadline directly with KSL rather than assuming the same dates repeat.
Funding the Programme
Some ATP students finance their fees through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), which extends loan products to students in various tertiary and professional programmes, subject to its own eligibility rules and application windows. Confirm current HELB eligibility for ATP students directly with HELB before you count on it, since loan products and terms change between cycles.
After the ATP
Passing the ATP and completing pupillage qualifies you for admission as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, administered through the Council of Legal Education and the Kenyan courts. From there, joining the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) keeps you in good standing to practice, pay your practising certificate fees, and access continuing professional development.
Practical Tips
Check your LLB admission date against the December 2014 cutoff early. It determines which entry route applies to you.
If you need the Pre-Bar Examination, start preparing for it well before the application window opens, since it is a separate hurdle from your LLB itself.
Apply for pupillage placements early. Popular chambers and firms fill their pupillage slots quickly.
Keep your KCSE certificate and LLB transcript ready. Missing documents are a common cause of delayed applications.
