What a Kenya Student Pass is
A Student Pass is the permit that lets a non Kenyan study at a Kenyan institution, issued under the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Regulations. Every non citizen enrolling in a Kenyan school, college or university needs one before starting classes, regardless of course length.
Two different rules depending on your nationality
Kenya belongs to the East African Community (EAC), alongside Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Students from these EAC member states get their Student Pass issuance fee waived. Students from any other African country pay the standard non EAC government fee of USD 100 per year of study, in addition to any application processing charges.
A Student Pass is not the same as an entry visa
Entering Kenya as a visitor, even visa free or through an online travel authorization, does not give permission to study. The Student Pass is a separate, course specific authorization tied to your institution and program. Enter the country on the correct visitor documentation, then complete your Student Pass application, ideally before you travel, so the pass sits ready or close to ready by the time your course starts.
How to apply through eFNS
Kenya processes student passes through the eFNS (Electronic Foreign Nationals Service) portal, run by the Directorate of Immigration Services . Applying means:
Create an account on eCitizen , the government's single sign on portal, which gives you access to eFNS.
Log in to eFNS, select Submit Applications, then Student Pass.
Fill in the online form and upload your supporting documents.
Pay the applicable fee online.
Track the application status through your eFNS account until a decision comes through.
Documents your institution and you need to provide
Form 30, filled out, signed and stamped by your institution's authorized signatory
A cover letter from the institution addressed to the Director General of Immigration Services, stating your course and its duration
A copy of your passport bio data page
Your admission letter
Proof you have funds to cover tuition and living costs
Contact your institution's international or admissions office early, as seen in guidance from institutions like Mount Kenya University . They complete Form 30 and the cover letter, and delays on their end are the most common reason applications stall.
Timing
Submit your application at least three months before your course begins. Processing typically runs 2-4 weeks once the Directorate has your complete file, but incomplete documents restart that clock, so a wide buffer protects your start date.
After you arrive
Hold on to your Student Pass approval and passport endorsement for the length of your studies. If your course extends beyond your pass's stated validity, apply for a renewal through the same eFNS system before the pass expires, using an updated cover letter and proof of continued enrollment from your institution.
