Kenyatta University Admission Guide: KUCCPS Cutoffs and Application Steps

TL;DR

Kenyatta University (KU) takes government-sponsored students through KUCCPS cluster point placement and self-sponsored students through direct application. You need a mean grade of C+ at KCSE, and cutoffs differ sharply by programme, with law and health sciences among the toughest to enter.

Getting into Kenyatta University

Kenyatta University (KU) fills most of its undergraduate places through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS ), the single body handling government-sponsored placement across Kenyan public universities. Students who miss KUCCPS placement, or want a specific course outside the cycle, can apply directly to KU as self-sponsored students at full programme cost.

Either route needs a minimum mean grade of C+ at KCSE. Beyond that baseline, each degree programme sets its own subject requirements, so check the KU admissions page for the course you want before applying.

How cluster points decide your placement

KUCCPS does not place you by your overall KCSE mean grade. It uses cluster points, calculated from your performance in the four subjects most relevant to a given degree cluster, weighted against how the rest of the country performed in that same cluster.

That means your placement chances change by course. Strong grades in biology and chemistry raise your cluster points for health sciences programmes, while strong grades in English, history and geography raise your standing for law or the humanities. Two students with identical mean grades can end up with very different cluster point scores for the same course.

Applying through KUCCPS

  1. Register at students.kuccps.net using your KCSE index number once results are released.

  2. List your preferred courses and institutions in order, including Kenyatta University where you want it.

  3. Submit before the KUCCPS deadline for that placement cycle.

  4. Check your placement status on the portal once KUCCPS releases results.

If placed at KU, you receive an admission letter through the portal, which you then use to report to the university and complete registration.

Cutoff points at Kenyatta University

Cutoffs move every cycle with the number of applicants and available places, but recent figures give a sense of scale. For the 2025/2026 placement cycle, KUCCPS-published cutoffs reported by Kenyans.co.ke put Kenyatta University's Bachelor of Laws at 40.746 points, the highest among the universities compared in that report, ahead of the University of Nairobi at 40.402 and JKUAT at 40.369.

Commerce cutoffs in the same report ranged from 21.375 at most institutions up to 33.703 at the University of Nairobi; the report does not give a Kenyatta University figure.

Treat published cutoffs as a planning guide rather than a fixed number. They shift with applicant volume each year, so confirm the live cutoff for your intake on the KUCCPS portal once results and placement open.

Applying as a self-sponsored student

If KUCCPS does not place you in your first-choice course at KU, or your grades sit close to but under the published cutoff, apply directly to the university for a self-sponsored place. You still need the C+ mean grade minimum, and you pay full tuition rather than the government-subsidised rate. Contact the KU admissions office for the current application portal link and fee schedule for your programme, since these can differ from the KUCCPS-placed rate.

Documents to prepare

  • KCSE certificate or result slip with index number

  • National ID or birth certificate

  • KCPE certificate

  • Recent passport photographs

Keep certified copies ready before either application window opens, since both KUCCPS and KU's direct portal ask for the same core documents during registration.
