What Knight-Hennessy funds

Knight-Hennessy Scholars covers full tuition for up to three years, matched to your degree length, plus a stipend for living and academic expenses and a travel allowance for one round-trip flight to Stanford each year. Source: Knight-Hennessy Scholars .

If your program runs longer than three years, such as an MD, a PhD, or a Stanford dual or joint degree, your Stanford home department funds the remaining years. The scholarship layers on top of an offer you win on your own, so you need separate admission to a Stanford graduate school first.

Any graduate program counts

Unlike scholarships tied to one field, Knight-Hennessy funds students across all seven of Stanford's graduate schools: humanities and sciences, engineering, business, law, medicine, education, and public policy. Who qualifies

What a leadership-focused process means

The application includes short responses and a roughly 550-word essay, and finalists move through additional review stages that include an interview.

Because the program builds a cohort, not only a list of individual winners, selection also weighs how you would contribute to a group of scholars working across different fields. Expect questions about collaboration and how you have worked with people who see problems differently than you do.

The Knight-Hennessy application typically opens in the spring and closes in early October. Why applying to Stanford first matters

You cannot become a Knight-Hennessy Scholar without independently earning admission to a Stanford graduate program. The scholarship committee does not admit you to Stanford, and Stanford's individual graduate programs do not guarantee you a Knight-Hennessy award. Treat the two as separate, parallel processes with separate criteria, essays, and reviewers, even though they run on a shared timeline.

Because the scholarship funds any of Stanford's seven graduate schools, your choice of degree program should come first, driven by your academic and career goals, not by which program you think improves your odds of winning the scholarship. Reviewers evaluate leadership and character in the context of whatever field you bring, so a compelling JD candidate and a compelling PhD candidate in physics compete on equal footing.

What sets this apart from single-purpose fellowships

Most funded graduate fellowships attach to one field or one degree type, a PhD in a specific discipline, or an MBA program, for example. Knight-Hennessy instead builds a single cross-disciplinary community out of scholars pursuing completely different degrees, which is why its selection criteria center on leadership qualities that translate across fields rather than technical expertise in any one of them.

If you already have a strong record in your field but limited experience articulating how you lead or collaborate across differences, use your essay and short responses to address that directly, since the interview stage will likely probe the same territory.
