TL;DR

Algeria's LMD system takes you from a 3-year Licence into a 2-year Master and then a Doctorat that officially targets 3 years but often runs longer. Getting in gets more competitive and more personal at each step.

  • 🎓 Master admission depends on your Licence average and available seats in your specialty.

  • 📩 Doctorat admission needs a passing grade in a competitive exam plus a confirmed thesis supervisor.

  • 💵 Registration fees stay symbolic (near 200 DA) at every level, but most doctoral students do not receive a research salary.

  • ⏱️ A Master takes about 2 years; a Doctorat is officially 3 years but commonly takes longer in practice.

The LMD system beyond the bachelor's

Algeria's higher education runs on the LMD structure shared across much of Francophone Africa: Licence (3 years), Master (2 years), Doctorat (3 years officially, longer in practice). Your Master splits into M1 and M2, with M2 ending in a thesis or supervised project (memoire) you defend before a jury. A Doctorat centers on original research under a supervisor, written up as a thesis and defended publicly once your supervisor and lab consider it ready.

Getting into a master's program

Admission to Master 1 is competitive and depends first on your Licence average, then on available seats in your target specialty, since popular fields (management, computer science, clinical specialties) receive far more applications than places. You register your wishes through the university system during the M1 registration window, similar in spirit to undergraduate orientation but run at the level of your faculty rather than nationally. Some specialties add a written test or interview on top of your average, so check your target department's specific admission notice each year rather than assuming your average alone secures a seat.

Getting into a doctorate

A Doctorat starts before you apply: you need a research topic and a supervisor (directeur de these) affiliated with an accredited research laboratory willing to take you on, since almost no doctoral program admits students without a named supervisor already lined up. Formal admission then usually runs through a faculty-level competitive exam (concours), combining a written test in your field with an interview on your proposed research direction. Once accepted, you register and pay the same symbolic registration fee that applies at Licence and Master level, confirmed at close to 200 DA on doctoral registration guides such as the one published by ESI , and you renew this registration every year you remain enrolled.

Funding graduate study

Most doctoral students in Algeria do not receive a research salary the way some countries pay PhD candidates. If you qualify for the state bursary on the same social and income criteria as undergraduates, you keep receiving it at the postgraduate level, along with hostel and subsidized meal access through your DOU. Some laboratories fund specific research tasks or short contracts tied to a funded project, but this depends on your lab and supervisor rather than a guaranteed national program, so confirm what funding, if any, comes with your specific doctoral position before you commit years of research to it.

Realistic timelines

Plan for 2 years to complete a Master, assuming your M2 thesis stays on schedule. A Doctorat officially targets 3 years post-Master, but across most fields and universities, 4 to 6 years is a more realistic range once you account for data collection, lab access, publication requirements, and thesis committee scheduling. Build your personal and financial plan around the longer estimate rather than the official minimum.
