MBA Options for Professionals Studying Within Africa

Why study an MBA within Africa

You do not need to leave the continent for an MBA that international employers recognize. A handful of African business schools hold accreditation from the same bodies that rate top programs in Europe and North America, including the Association of MBAs (AMBA), AACSB, and EQUIS. Studying locally also cuts your cost against a US or UK program and keeps your professional network inside the market where you plan to work.

Most schools built for working professionals run part-time, modular, or weekend formats so you keep your job while you study. Full-time options exist too, usually shorter and more intensive, aimed at people who can step away from work for a year.

Lagos Business School, Nigeria

Lagos Business School (LBS) runs four MBA tracks. The Full-Time MBA takes 18 months and asks for at least 3 years of work experience plus a GMAT or GRE score.

The Modular MBA covers the same ground over 24 months in a blended online and on-campus format, aimed at people who cannot step away from work for a year and a half. The Executive MBA and Modular Executive MBA both run 24 months and target candidates with at least 7 years of experience, including 3 years in a managerial role, using an LBS-administered admission test instead of GMAT or GRE.

LBS holds AMBA accreditation, the first business school in West, East, or Central Africa to earn it, and AACSB accreditation, the first in West Africa. Both put it in a small group of business schools worldwide with more than one major accreditation.

Strathmore Business School, Kenya

Strathmore Business School holds AACSB and EQUIS accreditation, two of the most selective global business school accreditations, and few schools in East Africa carry both. The school built its reputation on ethical leadership training and runs a well-known green campus in Nairobi. If your career runs through Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, or Rwanda, its regional employer network is a practical advantage over a program based further away.

GIMPA Business School, Ghana

The Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) runs a 2-year MBA aimed at graduates with little to moderate work experience, offered in evening, weekend, and modular formats across Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tema. Weekend classes can start on Friday evenings, and evening sessions sometimes include Saturday lectures, so check the specific timetable for your chosen city before enrolling. Specializations include marketing, human resource management, and finance and accounting.

UCT Graduate School of Business, South Africa

The UCT Graduate School of Business (GSB) in Cape Town runs an intensive full-time MBA over one year, from August to July, plus a modular option spread over 2 years for people who need to keep working. UCT GSB holds triple accreditation from AMBA, EQUIS, and AACSB, a status only a small number of schools worldwide hold. The Financial Times ranked it the top MBA in Africa, and QS placed it first in the Middle East and Africa in 2025.

Fees for the 2026 full-time intake sit at roughly R367,000, provisional at time of publication, plus a 1,000 ZAR (about $100) application fee.

Application rounds close April 15 and May 15, with a final deadline of July 19 for the class starting August 11, 2026.

How to choose between them

  • If you want the fastest full-time route, LBS's 18-month program or UCT GSB's 1-year format are the shortest on this list

  • If you cannot leave your job, GIMPA's evening and weekend format or LBS's Modular MBA fit around full-time work

  • If global recognition and rankings matter most to you, UCT GSB's triple accreditation and Africa-wide rankings carry the most external weight

  • If your career is regional rather than international, Strathmore's East Africa network or LBS's West Africa reach may serve you better than a program built for a global cohort

Check each school's admission page directly for current GMAT or GRE requirements, work experience minimums, and application deadlines before you apply, since these change between intakes.
