China trains international students in English-medium MBBS programs at many universities, but Malaysia's Medical Council recognizes only a small, named group of them, and Indonesia's KKI requires every graduate to pass a competency evaluation regardless of which Chinese university you attended. China's appeal for Malaysian and Indonesian pre-med students
China runs six-year MBBS programs taught fully in English at a number of universities, aimed at international students who want a medical degree without the domestic Chinese-language track. Tuition and living costs sit below Malaysia's private medical schools and many Western destinations, and several Chinese universities rank well internationally for medical research. Ministry of Education China requires universities to hold approval to admit international students into these English-medium programs, so confirm your target university holds this approval directly with the university, not through an agent's claim.
Malaysia recognizes named universities, not the whole country
The Malaysian Medical Council registers graduates automatically only when their exact university and qualification appear on the Second Schedule of the Medical Act 1971. Two Chinese medical schools have held this listing since 19 March 2013 : Fudan University's Shanghai Medical College and Shanghai Jiao Tong University's School of Medicine. The list can change over time, so check the current Second Schedule on the MMC website for your target university before you commit to six years of study.
If your Chinese university sits outside the current list, you can still practice in Malaysia. Graduates of non-listed universities sit the Malaysian Qualifying Examination (MQE) after they return, then complete supervised housemanship, before MMC grants full registration. Ask MMC directly whether your specific university is under review for future listing, since institutions do get added over time.
Indonesia evaluates every foreign degree the same way
The Konsil Kedokteran Indonesia (KKI) does not keep a shortlist of pre-approved foreign universities for automatic registration. Every graduate of a foreign medical school, including Chinese universities, submits a diploma legalized by the Directorate General of Higher Education (DIKTI) and completes a competency evaluation before KKI issues a Surat Tanda Registrasi (STR). After STR, you still sit the national competency exam (UKMPPD) that Indonesian medical graduates take, and you need a local practice permit (SIP) from your area health office before you treat patients.
Studying at a well-known Chinese university does not skip this process. Build the evaluation timeline, which can extend your return to practice by months, into your career planning from year one.
Weigh total years to registration, not just tuition
A cheaper Chinese MBBS that adds a year of exams and supervised training after graduation can end up costing close to, or more than, a directly recognized medical degree once you count lost income and exam fees. Compare total years to full registration at home, not just tuition, when you weigh a China MBBS against a private medical school seat at home.
Program length differs from home too
China's international MBBS programs typically run six years, made up of classroom and clinical teaching followed by a one-year internship, longer than Malaysia's five-year MBBS or the roughly six-year path Indonesian students follow through a bachelor's stage and a separate profession stage. Factor the extra year into your budget and your career timeline when you compare a China MBBS with medical school at home.

If you are partway through a Chinese MBBS and have not confirmed your university's status, contact MMC or KKI now rather than waiting until graduation. Ask for a written response on your specific university and qualification, keep a copy for your records, and use it to plan your post-graduation timeline. A written answer early lets you budget properly for MQE or the competency evaluation, instead of finding out you need extra years of exams right when you expect to start work.
What to verify before you apply
Confirm the Chinese university holds Ministry of Education China approval to run an English-medium MBBS for international students.
Check the current MMC Second Schedule (Malaysian applicants) or ask KKI directly (Indonesian applicants) about your target university.
Ask about clinical rotation language and supervised patient hours, since English-medium lectures do not guarantee English-medium hospital rotations.
Budget time and fees for MQE (Malaysia) or the competency evaluation and UKMPPD (Indonesia) as the likely path, not a rare exception.
Ask current graduates from your home country how long their registration process took after they returned.
