MBBS in China: What ASEAN Students Must Verify Before Enrolling

Start with the World Directory of Medical Schools
The World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), jointly run by the World Federation for Medical Education and FAIMER, lists over 3,700 medical schools worldwide, including hundreds in China. Search your target university by name before you apply, and confirm the specific program, level, and years of operation listed match what you are enrolling in. A school can run multiple medical programs, and only some of these may appear in the directory.
What a WDOMS listing does and does not mean
A listing in WDOMS confirms the school is registered in a global reference database used by medical regulators. It does not mean the World Federation for Medical Education or FAIMER accredits, endorses, or vouches for the quality of that school's teaching. Many licensing bodies, including the US ECFMG, require WDOMS listing as one eligibility check among several, not as proof of recognition on its own. Treat a WDOMS listing as a first filter, not a final answer.
Check your own country's medical council next
Recognition of a foreign MBBS runs through your home country's medical regulator, and each ASEAN country sets its own rules, independent of WDOMS status.

Contact your council directly, or check its published list, before you accept an offer. Rules and lists change, and a school recognized one intake year is not guaranteed to stay recognized indefinitely.
Check China's own recognition of the program
Confirm the university and program appear correctly in China's own higher education system through the Ministry of Education of China . Ask the university's international office for an official degree verification report at graduation, since your home country's regulator may ask for this document alongside your diploma and transcript.
Other checks before you enroll
Ask which teaching hospital hosts your clinical rotations, and confirm that hospital is a genuine, functioning affiliate of the university rather than a name listed only in marketing material.
Ask what language your clinical years run in. Many MBBS programs teach preclinical years in English but shift toward Mandarin for patient-facing clinical rotations, which affects both your learning and your ability to communicate with patients.
Ask for outcomes from recent graduates from your own country: how many sat their home country's licensing exam, and how many passed. A program with no track record of graduates from your country carries more uncertainty than one with a documented pass history.
Confirm whether the program requires a separate foreign medical graduate exam back home, on top of your home country's standard licensing exam, since some countries add this step specifically for overseas-trained doctors.
Why this verification step matters more for medicine
An unrecognized business or engineering degree usually costs you time, since you can often find another employer or credential path. An unrecognized medical degree can block you from practicing medicine entirely in your home country, after 5 or 6 years of study and a large tuition bill already spent. This asymmetry is why medical degree verification deserves more scrutiny before enrollment than most other subjects, and why relying on an agent's assurance alone is not enough.
A ranking is not a recognition status
A university's position in a global academic ranking says nothing about whether your home country's medical council recognizes its medical degree. A highly ranked university can run a medical program your council does not recognize, and a lower-ranked university can hold full recognition. Check recognition status and ranking as two separate questions, and do not let a strong ranking substitute for a direct check with your council.

Red flags
Be cautious of any agent or recruiter who claims a degree is automatically recognized everywhere once a school appears in WDOMS. Recognition is decided by your home country's medical council, not by any international directory. Be equally cautious of tuition priced far below comparable programs, programs unable to name a specific teaching hospital, and programs that cannot produce recent graduate outcomes from students in your own country.
