What "CASPer-first" means at McMaster

Most Canadian medical schools rank applicants mainly by GPA before anything else. McMaster's Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine sets a GPA floor instead of a ranking scale. Clear that floor and your GPA carries roughly the same weight as two other scores in your file: your MCAT CARS result and your CASPer result.

The eligibility minimums

To apply, you need a cumulative OMSAS GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4.0 scale , calculated across a minimum of 15 full courses or 30 half courses, as confirmed on the OMSAS McMaster admissions guide . You also need a score of at least 123 on the Critical Analysis and Reasoning section of the MCAT. McMaster does not score the other three MCAT sections at all, so a weak Chemistry and Physics or Biology score will not hurt your file the way it would at a school that reads the full test.

Clearing 3.0 does not make you competitive. It only makes you eligible for the file review. Admitted classes run well above the floor, so treat 3.0 as the point where your file gets read, not the point where it competes.

How the pre interview formula splits

Past the eligibility stage, McMaster weighs your GPA, your CARS score and your CASPer score close to evenly for the pre interview ranking that decides who gets invited to the Multiple Mini Interview. None of the three dominates the other two. This is the part of McMaster's process that differs most from schools where a high GPA alone carries an applicant to an interview.

Your Autobiographical Sketch, submitted with a verifier for every entry, plus three confidential assessment forms, round out the application. These give the admissions committee context on your activities and character beyond the three numeric scores.

Why CARS specifically

McMaster runs its curriculum through problem based learning in small groups, without traditional lectures. The CARS section tests reading comprehension and reasoning under time pressure, with no science content required, a closer match to the skills that format leans on than a memorized science score. That is one way to read why McMaster scores only CARS while other schools read the full test.

Comparing this to a traditional GPA-first school

At a school that ranks mainly by cumulative GPA, a 3.9 usually outranks a 3.3 before the committee looks at anything else. At McMaster, that same 3.3 applicant can close the gap entirely if their CARS and CASPer scores run strong, since none of the three factors carries most of the weight on its own. This is why some applicants with a mid range GPA treat McMaster as their strongest option on the list, while applicants who lean on GPA alone sometimes underperform there relative to their other applications.

What this means if your GPA is not your strongest number

If your GPA sits closer to 3.0 than 4.0 but you test well under pressure, McMaster's formula gives you a real path that a strictly GPA ranked school does not. A strong CASPer performance and a strong CARS score often offset a GPA that would rank low elsewhere.

The reverse holds too. A high GPA does not protect you if your CASPer or CARS score lags. Treat CASPer preparation and MCAT CARS practice as equally important to your grades if McMaster is on your list, not as an afterthought once your transcript looks strong.
