How Competitive Medical School Admission Is in Indonesia and What It Costs

TL;DR

Medical school in Indonesia is one of the hardest programs to enter and one of the most expensive, with top PTN faculties admitting under 5 out of every 100 SNBT applicants and Mandiri seats adding tuition that reaches hundreds of millions of rupiah in uang pangkal.

  • 🎓 UI's Kedokteran program admitted about 90 SNBT seats against roughly 3,275 applicants in the 2025 cycle, near a 3% acceptance rate.

  • 💵 PTN Kedokteran UKT ranges from about Rp500,000 at the lowest tier to over Rp25-30 million per semester depending on your assigned tier.

  • Mandiri seats add a one time uang pangkal that has reached Rp120 million at UI, Rp150 million at IPB and Rp115 million at Unri.

  • UKT tiers apply the same across SNBP, SNBT and Mandiri admits. Only Mandiri adds the extra uang pangkal charge.

How Competitive Medical School Admission Is in Indonesia and What It Costs

Why Kedokteran Seats Are So Hard to Get

Pendidikan Dokter (medicine) draws more applicants per seat than almost any other program at Indonesia's top public universities. Flagship faculties keep their SNBT quota deliberately narrow, often between 75 and 125 seats, while thousands of students nationwide list medicine as a top choice each cycle.

At Universitas Indonesia, SNBT figures compiled from official daya tampung and peminat data put Kedokteran's 2025 SNBT quota near 90 seats against about 3,275 applicants, an acceptance rate close to 3%. Universitas Gadjah Mada and Universitas Padjadjaran run comparably tight, since both sit in the same tier of applicant demand as UI for medicine.

Three Routes, Same Level of Competition

SNBP screens applicants on school grades and a strict per-school quota, so only a handful of top ranked students from each eligible school get considered for medicine at all. SNBT opens the field nationally through the Tes Kemampuan Skolastik, but the same narrow seat count keeps the odds low regardless of test score.

Jalur Mandiri, run independently by each PTN, often expands the medicine quota beyond SNBP and SNBT combined, which raises admission odds but shifts more of the cost onto your family.

UKT Tuition by University

Regular semester tuition (UKT) for Kedokteran at PTNs spans roughly Rp500,000 at the lowest (Kelompok 1) tier, capped nationwide by Permendikbud Ristek No. 2/2024, to more than Rp25-30 million per semester at the highest tiers, based on 2025 UKT data compiled across PTN medical faculties. Your tier depends on your family's declared income and assets, and the same UKT scale applies whether you come in through SNBP, SNBT or Mandiri.

Cost itemTypical range
UKT per semester, all routesRp500,000 to Rp25-30 million
Uang pangkal at UI, Mandiri, top UKT tierup to Rp120 million
Uang pangkal at IPB, MandiriRp135-150 million
Uang pangkal at Unsoed, Mandiri, 2023/2024 cycleup to Rp600 million
Uang pangkal/IPI at Unri, 2024, MandiriRp115 million

These uang pangkal figures come from 2026 reporting on Mandiri fee structures at major PTNs, and Unri's figure comes from its Rector Decision No. 496/UN19/KPT/2024. The Unsoed figure reflects the 2023/2024 admission cycle and may not match the current year, so verify against your target intake year before you budget.

Only Mandiri admits pay uang pangkal. Your family's assigned UKT tier decides how much you owe, since students placed in the lowest UKT group at UI pay no uang pangkal at all even through Mandiri.

Where to Check Real Numbers Before You Apply

SNPMB publishes daya tampung (seat quota) for every program ahead of each SNBP and SNBT cycle, and peminat (applicant count) numbers become public after registration closes. Compare both figures for your target faculty's most recent cycle rather than an older or unrelated year, since quotas and applicant volume shift year to year. Each polytechnic and university mandiri office also publishes its own quota and fee schedule separately from SNPMB, so check that page directly if Mandiri is part of your plan.

What This Means for Your Application Strategy

Apply through SNBP if your school ranks you near the top and your school's SNBP quota for medicine is realistic, since it costs nothing and does not use up your SNBT attempt. Treat SNBT as your primary national shot, and research each target university's actual daya tampung and prior year peminat numbers rather than relying on the program's reputation alone. Consider Mandiri at a high uang pangkal campus only once your family confirms, with a real budget, that it will cover that one time cost alongside years of UKT, and ask about installment options directly with the faculty's finance office before you commit.

Private medical faculties sit outside this PTN fee structure entirely and set their own tuition and admission fees per campus, so compare a specific private faculty's published cost sheet against the PTN Mandiri costs above before ruling either option out.
