Medical Training in Uganda: MBChB Structure and Internship

Getting into MBChB

Ugandan universities admit MBChB students mainly from A-level graduates with passes in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE). Medicine is one of the most competitive courses at Makerere and other public universities, so your weighted points need to rank high against other applicants in your combination. Other universities also run MBChB programs with their own admission cutoffs, including the public Mbarara University of Science and Technology and the private Kampala International University.

How long MBChB training takes

The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) is Uganda's standard undergraduate medical degree. It runs 5 years if you pass every year on the first attempt. Makerere University College of Health Sciences trains the largest number of doctors in the country, and several other universities run their own MBChB programs alongside it.

The early years cover basic medical sciences such as anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. Later years move into clinical rotations across internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, and community health, where you work directly with patients under supervision.

Provisional registration for interns

Once you graduate, the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council (UMDPC ) grants provisional registration, letting you begin your internship. You are not licensed to practice independently at this stage. A specialist supervises every rotation you complete.

The internship year

Internship lasts 1 year and splits into two halves. You spend 6 months in a medical discipline, either Internal Medicine or Paediatrics, and 6 months in a surgical discipline, either Surgery or Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Hospitals designated for internship training host these rotations, and each one has a specialist supervisor who signs off on your competence before you move to the next posting.

This structure exposes you to both medical and surgical practice before you choose a specialty later. It also gives the UMDPC direct evidence of your clinical competence, since supervisors report on your performance throughout the year.

Full registration and what comes next

After you complete the internship year and your supervisors confirm your competence, the UMDPC upgrades you from provisional to full registration. Full registration lets you practice as a general practitioner anywhere in Uganda. From there, doctors work as general practitioners in public or private facilities, or apply for postgraduate specialist training, which leads to specialist registration with the UMDPC once completed.

Doctors who want to specialize apply for postgraduate programs at Makerere or other universities, or pursue fellowship training through regional colleges such as the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa. The UMDPC also issues temporary registration for foreign-trained practitioners, capped at 12 months, and additional-qualification registration for doctors adding a further specialty after their first one.
