MEXT and Other Japanese Government Scholarships for Myanmar Students

TL;DR

MEXT is Japan's fully funded government scholarship, covering tuition, a monthly stipend and a round trip ticket, and Myanmar applicants apply through the embassy-recommended route screened by the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA). For the April 2026 intake, Myanmar's embassy round opened Google Form registration on 14 April 2025 and closed document submission on 14 May 2025, roughly a year before classes start.

  • 💵 MEXT covers tuition, a monthly stipend, and round trip airfare between Myanmar and Japan.

  • 📩 Apply about a year ahead through MAJA for the embassy-recommended route.

  • 🎓 Other routes include university-recommended MEXT and the Japanese Studies Course for language students.

  • ⏱️ Applicants with limited Japanese often study at a language school first before starting a degree.

MEXT and Other Japanese Government Scholarships for Myanmar Students

What MEXT covers

Japan's government MEXT scholarship (Monbukagakusho) fully funds international students at Japanese national universities across undergraduate, graduate, research student and technical college tracks. It pays tuition and entrance fees directly to the university, a monthly stipend for living costs, and a round trip economy ticket between your home country and Japan (MEXT application guidelines ). No separate tuition payment is required once the scholarship is confirmed.

The three main application routes

  • Embassy-recommended: apply through the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, the most common route for students applying straight from high school or an undergraduate degree.

  • University-recommended: apply directly to a Japanese university that has already selected you and forwards your name to MEXT, more common at graduate level after a professor agrees to supervise you.

  • Japanese Studies Course: a shorter, non-degree scholarship for students actively studying Japanese language and culture at a university outside Japan, aimed at deepening language skills rather than earning a degree.

How the Myanmar embassy round works

Myanmar applicants for the embassy-recommended route submit documents to the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA), which runs the first screening before candidates move to the written exam and interview stage at the Embassy of Japan (Embassy of Japan in Myanmar ). For the April 2026 intake, the embassy opened Google Form registration on 14 April 2025, with document submission running from 7 to 14 May 2025. Passing the embassy stage does not guarantee the scholarship, since MEXT in Japan runs a final screening afterward. The whole cycle runs about a year before the Japanese academic year begins in April, so check the embassy's page each cycle for that year's exact dates rather than relying on a fixed calendar date.

Other funding and support routes

Outside MEXT, Myanmar students look at Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) scholarships, which some Japanese universities and language schools distribute directly to enrolled students rather than through a national application (JASSO ). These are smaller and shorter than MEXT and vary by institution, so check with the specific school once you hold an offer. Private Japanese universities also run their own tuition reduction and scholarship schemes for international students, separate from the government MEXT program.

Language school pathway before university

Myanmar applicants without enough Japanese for direct degree study often spend one to two years at a Japanese language school first, aiming for around JLPT N2 before starting a program taught in Japanese. MEXT undergraduate scholars who need language preparation get a preparatory period built into the scholarship, starting with intensive Japanese study before moving into their degree faculty. Students targeting English-medium programs at Japanese universities sometimes skip this step, though the number of full English-medium undergraduate courses in Japan stays small compared to Japanese-medium programs.

Steps to apply

  1. Confirm eligibility, age limits and academic record, on the current year's MEXT guidelines published by the Ministry.

  2. Register and submit documents to MAJA within the embassy's announced window.

  3. Sit the written exam and interview at the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar.

  4. If recommended by the embassy, wait for final selection by MEXT and a Japanese university.

  5. Prepare for departure: health check, visa application, and extra language study if your Japanese level needs it.
