What Happens if You Miss the Deadline to Accept a JAMB CAPS Offer
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Dec 12, 2024 • Africa Admissions & Exams
If you do not accept or reject your JAMB CAPS offer within its response window, JAMB treats it as declined and releases the slot to another candidate.
⏱️ Every admission offer stays open for a limited period after your institution uploads it to CAPS.
A missed deadline does not cancel your UTME result, but it costs you that specific offer.
The freed slot goes back to the institution, which offers it to the next qualified candidate on a supplementary list.
📩 JAMB sends SMS and email alerts when an offer appears, so check the phone number and email on your profile often.
Recovery after a missed deadline is not guaranteed. Contact your institution's admissions office and JAMB directly, but expect no automatic reinstatement.
What Counts as Missing the Deadline
Every admission offer on JAMB CAPS carries a response window. Once your institution uploads your name to CAPS and JAMB approves the recommendation, the window starts. If you do not log in to accept or reject the offer, or send the SMS response, before that window closes, JAMB treats your silence as a non-response rather than an acceptance.
What Happens to the Slot
An unclaimed slot does not stay reserved for you. The institution reports it as available again, and JAMB CAPS makes it visible for the department to offer to another candidate, usually through a second or supplementary admission list. Your original offer disappears once this happens, even if you log in later wanting to accept it.
Does Your UTME Result Still Count?
Missing one admission offer does not cancel your UTME registration or result. You remain in the JAMB system and stay eligible if your institution runs a supplementary list before the admission cycle closes, or if the Change of Institution option is still open on your profile to apply to a different school with open slots. What you lose is that specific placement, not your entire candidacy for the cycle.
One Offer at a Time Limits Your Options
JAMB does not let you hold offers from more than one institution simultaneously, so weighing multiple pending admissions is not something the system supports. If two institutions both show interest in your profile at different points in the cycle, respond to whichever offer actually appears on CAPS first rather than assuming a second, preferred offer will still be there once you decide.
Why Candidates Miss Their Window
They stop checking their JAMB profile after registration, assuming the institution will contact them directly.
The phone number or email linked to their JAMB profile is no longer active, so alerts never arrive.
They wait to compare offers from more than one institution instead of accepting or rejecting the one that already appeared on CAPS.
How to Protect Yourself
Check your admission status on the JAMB e-facility portal every few days once your institution's screening exercise finishes.
Keep the phone number and email on your JAMB profile active and checked daily during the admission period.
Respond to an offer as soon as you decide. Waiting does not improve your options, since JAMB does not rank offers by how long a candidate takes to decide.
If you already missed a deadline, contact the admissions office of the institution that offered you the slot and the JAMB office nearest you, and ask whether the department still has room on its supplementary list.
If the Whole Cycle Closes on You
Some candidates miss every offer window across an entire admission cycle. In that case, the practical path forward is registering for the next UTME or Direct Entry cycle rather than waiting on the closed one, since JAMB does not carry an unclaimed offer over into a new admission year. Treat every CAPS alert as time-sensitive from the moment it lands, not something to revisit once other decisions settle.
