How Higher Education Works in Moldova: Degrees, Universities and the Academic Year

Moldova runs a three-cycle Bologna system: bachelor degrees take 3 to 4 years, master degrees 1 to 2 years, and doctoral study 3 years. The academic year runs September to August in two semesters with exams in December/January and May/June.
🎓 Bachelor (Cycle I): 3-4 years, minimum 180 ECTS credits
🎓 Master (Cycle II): 1-2 years, 90-120 ECTS credits
🎓 Doctoral (Cycle III): 3 years, 180 ECTS credits
Medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary medicine and architecture merge cycles I and II into one integrated program
⏱️ Two exam sessions a year: December/January and May/June
Teaching happens at universities, academies of studies, institutes and higher schools
The three-cycle degree structure
Moldova joined the Bologna Process in 2005 and structures higher education around three cycles, the same model used across most of Europe. Together, a bachelor and a master degree must add up to at least 300 ECTS credits, and each year of full-time study carries a minimum of 60 transferable credits. This makes Moldovan qualifications straightforward to compare with degrees from EU countries when you plan further study or job applications abroad, according to the Eurydice national system description .
Bachelor degrees (Cycle I)
A bachelor degree in Moldova takes 3 to 4 years depending on the field, giving you a minimum of 180 ECTS credits and access to the labor market or a master program. Most programs teach in Romanian, with a growing number of English-taught tracks at universities that recruit internationally, such as Moldova State University .
Master degrees (Cycle II)
Master study runs 1 to 2 years and adds 90 to 120 ECTS credits on top of your bachelor degree. You need a bachelor diploma to enroll, and most programs specialize in a narrower field than the bachelor stage.
Doctoral degrees (Cycle III)
Doctoral study takes 3 years and carries 180 ECTS credits. Entry requires a master degree, and the cycle ends with a public defense of your thesis, following the standard Bologna doctoral format.
Integrated programs in medicine, pharmacy and architecture
Medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary medicine and architecture do not split into separate bachelor and master stages. These fields run as one long integrated program that combines cycles I and II, and the resulting diploma counts as equivalent to a master degree. Integrated programs only run full-time, unlike other fields that also offer part-time and distance formats.
Types of higher education institutions
You will find higher education offered at universities, academies of studies, institutes and higher schools. Every institution needs provisional operation authorization before it can start teaching, and it earns full accreditation only after its first cohort graduates. Moldova State University, the Technical University of Moldova and the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova rank among the largest and oldest.
Study formats: full-time, part-time and distance
Alongside full-time study, Moldovan universities offer part-time and distance formats for most non-integrated fields. Choosing part-time or distance study adds one extra year to your total program length compared to full-time.
The academic calendar
The academic year opens in September and closes at the end of August, split into two semesters of teaching. Exams for the first semester run in December and January, and second-semester exams run in May and June. Breaks fall in January (winter), April (spring) and July-August (summer), according to the Eurydice academic calendar page . Individual universities have some autonomy to adjust exact dates within these windows, so always check your own institution's calendar before booking travel.
Quality assurance and accreditation
Moldova's National Agency for Quality Assurance in Education and Research reviews institutions and programs, with re-accreditation required every five years. This external check gives you a way to confirm a program's standing before you apply, separate from marketing claims on a university website.
How Moldova compares within Europe
The three-cycle structure, ECTS credits and two-semester calendar mirror what you find in Romania, Poland or Germany, so credit transfer and degree recognition work through the same channels as elsewhere in Europe. Tuition and living costs sit well below Western European levels, which is the main reason the country draws students from neighboring EU states and beyond.
