TL;DR

Start researching programs 12 months before your target start date. Book language tests 8-10 months out, submit UK applications by mid-January, France and Germany later in the cycle, then apply for your visa and housing the moment you hold an offer.

  • 🎓 UK (UCAS): 2027 entry main deadline is 13 January 2027, and Oxbridge, medicine, dentistry, and vet close earlier, on 15 October 2026

  • 📩 Germany (Uni-Assist): most winter-semester programs close around 15 July, though top universities and most master's set earlier deadlines

  • 🇫🇷 France (Parcoursup): opens in January, closes mid-March

  • ⏱️ Book IELTS/TOEFL at least 8-10 weeks before your earliest deadline, in case you need a resit

  • 🏠 Apply for your visa and start your housing search the day you accept an offer

Month-by-Month Application Calendar for European Universities

Plan around a 12-month countdown

Most European bachelor's and master's programs start in September or October. Work backward from that date and treat each country's system as a separate deadline, since the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and Ireland all run on different calendars. This timeline uses a September/October 2027 start as the working example, so shift every date by one year for a 2028 start.

12-11 months before: research and shortlist

Build a shortlist of 5-10 programs and check each one's language requirement, subject prerequisites, and application system. UK applications for 2027 entry open on the UCAS portal on 1 September 2026, and the deadline for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry, and veterinary courses falls on 15 October 2026, months earlier than the general UCAS deadline. UCAS

10-9 months before: book language tests

Register for IELTS or TOEFL as soon as you know your target programs, since test slots fill up and results take days to weeks to arrive. Leave room for a resit: book your first attempt at least 8-10 weeks before your earliest application deadline, so a low score does not force you to miss it.

8 months before: submit UK applications

The main UCAS deadline for 2027 entry undergraduate courses, outside the October early-deadline group, is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time. UCAS Submit your personal statement, reference, and grades by this date for equal consideration alongside every other applicant.

7-6 months before: France, the Netherlands, and Italy open their portals

France's Parcoursup portal opens in January and closes in mid-March, with a confirmation phase running into the summer. The Netherlands' Studielink system opens in October for the following academic year, and programs with limited places (numerus fixus) close their applications months before open-enrollment programs.

Italy's Universitaly portal timing depends on the university, since Italian institutions set their own bachelor's application windows. Check each portal directly every year, since exact dates shift by a few days.

5-3 months before: German and Irish deadlines, plus visa prep

Uni-Assist, the document service used by many German universities for international applications, lists 15 July as the typical deadline for programs starting in the October winter semester, though individual universities and most master's programs set earlier deadlines. Uni-Assist Ireland's CAO system runs its main application round earlier in the year, with a separate later window for adding or changing choices, so check the current CAO calendar directly.

Start your student visa application as soon as you hold a confirmed offer. Processing time varies by country and takes anywhere from a few weeks to several months, so apply the moment your documents are ready rather than waiting until close to the deadline.

Some countries also require proof of funds in a blocked account, such as Germany's Sperrkonto, before they issue a visa, so check your host country's specific financial requirement early.

Master's applications often run on a more flexible calendar

Master's admissions in many countries accept rolling applications well into spring, especially outside the most competitive programs. Do not assume the bachelor's deadlines above apply to your target master's. Check the specific program page, since two master's programs at the same university sometimes carry different deadlines depending on funding and cohort size.

Build in buffer time for document translation and legalization

Many countries require certified translations of your diploma and transcript, and some require an apostille or embassy legalization before a university accepts your documents. Start this process as soon as you have your final or predicted grades, since certified translation and legalization can take several weeks, and a delay here can push you past an application deadline even if your personal statement and test scores are ready. Keep digital and physical copies of every certified document, since you will resubmit the same paperwork for your visa application later in the year.

2-1 months before: housing, insurance, and travel

Secure student housing as early as your offer allows, since demand peaks in the weeks before term starts in the biggest university cities. Arrange health insurance that meets your host country's requirement, and confirm your arrival date against your program's orientation week.

Move-in month

Register with your local municipality where required, activate your residence permit or visa, open a local bank account if you plan to stay long term, and attend your program's orientation before classes begin.
