Progressing from National Diploma to Higher National Diploma After SIWES

Nigerian polytechnics require you to complete SIWES, the mandatory industrial attachment, before you move from a National Diploma (ND) into a Higher National Diploma (HND). Your ND CGPA classification then decides how easily you get an HND place, with Lower Credit (2.50 and above) as most polytechnics' working minimum.
🎓 The full ND to HND track runs across roughly four years of study plus the SIWES attachment.
The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) coordinates SIWES placements and pays students an allowance during the attachment.
📩 Most polytechnics need at least a Lower Credit ND result (2.50 CGPA and above) for direct HND admission.
⏱️ Pass-grade ND holders (2.00 to 2.49) face limited and institution-specific HND admission chances.
The five-stage ND to HND track
Nigerian polytechnics run the Higher National Diploma (HND) as a follow-on qualification to the National Diploma (ND), not an automatic continuation of it. You complete ND1 and ND2 over two years, go out for a supervised industrial attachment, then apply back into HND1 and HND2 for two more years if you meet the entry standard. The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) sets the academic framework every polytechnic follows for this structure, so the general shape stays consistent whether you study Accountancy in Lagos or Electrical Engineering in Kano.
Where SIWES fits
The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) sits between your ND and HND years. It places you with an employer in your field so you apply classroom learning on the job before you continue to HND. The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) coordinates SIWES placements and pays students an allowance during the attachment, working alongside NBTE, NUC and NCCE across universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. Completing SIWES is compulsory for polytechnic students. Your polytechnic will not process your HND application, and NBTE will not certify your eventual HND, without a SIWES completion record and your industry supervisor's assessment report.
The CGPA cut-off for HND entry
Polytechnics classify your ND result into bands, and where you land affects how easily you get an HND place:
| Classification | Typical CGPA range | HND entry chances |
|---|---|---|
| Distinction | 3.50 and above | Strong, usually guaranteed a place |
| Upper Credit | 3.00 to 3.49 | Strong |
| Lower Credit | 2.50 to 2.99 | Good, standard minimum most polytechnics set |
| Pass | 2.00 to 2.49 | Limited, depends on the polytechnic and course |
Most polytechnics treat Lower Credit as their working minimum for direct HND admission. If you graduate ND with a Pass, some institutions still admit you into HND, often into a different but related course, while others do not consider you at all. Confirm your target polytechnic's current policy directly with its academic office rather than assuming your ND CGPA automatically carries you through.
How the screening works
After SIWES, apply for HND admission through your polytechnic's own portal rather than through JAMB. Submit your ND result, SIWES report and supervisor assessment, then wait for your department to shortlist candidates against available HND places, which are usually fewer than the ND intake. Departments with high ND enrollment often run competitive HND screening even for Lower Credit holders, since demand for HND slots regularly outstrips supply.
Documents to gather before you apply
Your full ND transcript and statement of result, showing your final CGPA.
Your SIWES logbook and completion report, signed off by your industry supervisor.
Your original O-level result used for your ND admission.
Any letters of recommendation your department's HND screening process asks for.
If you fall short of your polytechnic's cut-off
Apply to a different polytechnic or a related HND course where your CGPA clears the minimum.
Ask your department about part-time or affiliated HND programs, which sometimes carry a lower bar than full-time day programs.
Consider a direct entry route into a university degree program instead, using your ND result where a university accepts it for consideration.
