Top-Up Degree Pathways from NCE to BEd or BSc Ed in Nigeria

NCE holders convert their certificate into a full education degree mainly through JAMB's Direct Entry scheme, which places you into 200 level of a Bachelor of Education (BEd) or Bachelor of Science Education (BSc Ed) program instead of starting from year one. Some universities also run affiliated top-up programs directly with Colleges of Education.
🎓 Direct Entry skips the first year, placing NCE holders at 200 level.
📩 You register for Direct Entry separately from the main UTME cycle, through JAMB.
Your teaching subject combination in NCE should match the degree course you apply for.
Some universities run affiliated part-time or sandwich top-up programs with specific Colleges of Education.
Why NCE holders do not start a degree from scratch
An NCE already covers three years of teacher training, including education theory, subject content and supervised teaching practice. Nigerian universities recognize this through JAMB's Direct Entry scheme , which lets you enter a related degree program partway through instead of repeating content you already covered. For NCE holders, that almost always means entry at 200 level of a Bachelor of Education (BEd) or Bachelor of Science Education (BSc Ed) program.
How JAMB Direct Entry works for NCE holders
Direct Entry runs as a separate registration window from the main UTME cycle, though JAMB manages both through the same JAMB portal. You register with your NCE certificate or statement of result, list your university and course choices, and JAMB forwards your application to your chosen institutions for screening.
Universities check that your NCE subject combination lines up with the degree course you are applying for. An NCE in Mathematics and Physics, for example, points naturally toward a BSc Ed in Mathematics or Physics rather than a BEd in Guidance and Counselling.
Why your NCE subject combination matters
Universities place you at 200 level on the assumption that your NCE already covered the equivalent of a 100 level course load in that subject area.
A mismatch between your NCE combination and the degree course forces the faculty to either place you at 100 level or reject the application outright.
If your exact NCE combination has no direct 200 level match at your target university, look for a closely related course instead of assuming any BEd or BSc Ed course accepts any NCE background.
What universities screen for
Your NCE certificate or transcript, showing your subject combination and overall result.
Your original O-level result, since Direct Entry does not remove the base O-level requirement.
A university screening exercise, which some faculties of education run as an interview and others run as a short written test.
The exact minimum NCE grade a faculty of education accepts differs from one university to another. Check your target faculty's Direct Entry brochure or admission page directly rather than assuming a Pass-level NCE result clears every university's bar.
Affiliated top-up programs
Outside the standalone Direct Entry route, some universities run affiliated or sandwich BEd/BSc Ed programs in partnership with specific Colleges of Education, often delivered on the college's own campus or during vacation periods. These programs target serving teachers who already hold an NCE and want a degree without leaving their teaching job for a full-time campus program. Availability depends on which university your state's Colleges of Education partner with, so ask your college's academic office which affiliated options apply to your NCE.
Choosing between Direct Entry and an affiliated top-up
| Route | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| JAMB Direct Entry | NCE holders who study full-time on a main campus | More competitive, university sets its own screening |
| Affiliated top-up/sandwich | Serving teachers who need a flexible schedule | Limited to partner universities, sessions often run during holidays |
What a degree adds to an NCE
A BEd or BSc Ed opens roles an NCE alone does not, including senior secondary school teaching, university teaching-assistant and postgraduate education routes, and promotion tracks in state ministries of education that set a degree as the bar for senior positions. For many NCE holders already teaching, converting to a degree matters more for career progression than for the immediate right to teach at the basic education level, which the NCE alone already covers.
Before you apply
Gather your NCE certificate, transcript and O-level results early. Universities reject incomplete Direct Entry applications outright.
Confirm your teaching subject combination maps to a degree course the university actually runs.
Apply to more than one university where your combination fits, since faculties of education vary in how many Direct Entry slots they set aside each year.
