Nigeria Student Visa and Residence Permit Requirements for Other African Nationals
By Muntasir • Published Nov 10, 2025 • Updated Sep 20, 2026 • Visas & Student Mobility
ECOWAS citizens do not need a student visa to enter Nigeria and instead register for an ECOWAS Residence Card. Every other African student needs the R7A student visa before travel, then regularizes a residence permit inside Nigeria.
🎓 R7A visa needs an admission letter, 6 months of bank statements, and an immigration responsibility letter from your school.
⏱️ The R7A visa is valid 90 days on entry; you then apply to regularize into a renewable 2-year stay.
🏠 ECOWAS nationals (Ghana, Senegal, Benin, and other member states) skip the visa and register for the ECOWAS Residence Card instead. Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger left ECOWAS in January 2025, though their citizens still get visa-free entry under a transitional arrangement, so confirm current status before travel.
📩 Apply through the Nigerian embassy or consulate in your home country before you travel.
ECOWAS nationals versus other African students
Nigeria belongs to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and under the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement, citizens of member states enter Nigeria without a visa, per Nigerian immigration guidance . Member states include Benin, Cabo Verde, Cote d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo. Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger left ECOWAS in January 2025 to form the Alliance of Sahel States; their citizens still receive visa-free entry under a transitional arrangement, but confirm current status before travel since it is not guaranteed long-term.
If you hold a passport from one of these countries, skip the R7A student visa application. Instead, once you settle at your Nigerian institution, register with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in your place of residence and obtain an ECOWAS Residence Card (ERC), which covers your right to stay for study.
Students from any other African country, including Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Cameroon, follow the standard international student visa route below.
R7A student visa requirements
The Nigeria Immigration Service issues the R7A student visa to applicants admitted to an accredited Nigerian institution. Apply at the Nigerian embassy or consulate covering your home country before you travel, not after arrival.
| Document | Detail |
|---|---|
| Passport | Valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date |
| Admission letter | From an NUC or NBTE accredited institution |
| Immigration responsibility letter | Your institution confirms it accepts responsibility for you |
| Proof of tuition payment | Receipt or sponsor confirmation |
| Bank statement | Covering 6 months, yours or your sponsor's |
| Passport photograph | Recent, passport format |
Submit these through the embassy's online portal and pay the visa fee. Once issued, the R7A visa gives you 90 days to enter Nigeria and start the regularization process.
Some African countries do not host a Nigerian embassy. Check whether your nearest regional mission or Nigeria's High Commission covers visa processing for your country before you fix your travel dates.
Regularizing your stay after arrival
The 90-day R7A visa is an entry permit, not your full study authorization. Within that window, report to the Nigeria Immigration Service to regularize your status, a process that includes biometric capture and a medical check.
Once regularized, your stay converts into a renewable residence permit valid up to 2 years, matching the normal length of an academic program before you renew again. Missing the 90-day window puts you out of status, so start regularization as soon as you settle in, ideally within your first few weeks.
ECOWAS Residence Card process
If you qualify as an ECOWAS national, skip the visa application and register directly with the immigration office nearest your school after you arrive. Bring your passport, admission letter, and passport photographs.
The ECOWAS Residence Card does not require a work permit and renews for as long as you remain enrolled. This route is faster than the R7A process because it skips the pre-travel embassy visa stage entirely.
Family members and part-time work
If your spouse travels with you, they apply separately for the R7B visa rather than joining your R7A application. Nigeria permits R7A visa holders to work on campus or take up employment tied to their studies, but only with prior approval from the institution and NIS.
Before you travel
Confirm your institution is accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) or National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) before you apply for admission.
Start your visa application as soon as you receive your admission letter, since embassy processing takes weeks, not days.
Keep certified copies of every document you submit, since you present the same set again during regularization in Nigeria.
Check with your Nigerian institution's international office. Many schools run a student affairs unit that assists directly with regularization paperwork.
