How Higher Education Works in North Macedonia: Degrees, Universities and the Academic Year

A Bologna-aligned system

North Macedonia joined the Bologna Process at the Berlin ministerial meeting in 2003, and its higher education system now mirrors the structure used across most of the European Higher Education Area . Degrees sit in three cycles: undergraduate, master's, and doctoral. Every program carries ECTS credits, so a semester of study transfers on paper the same way it would in Germany, Poland, or Italy.

This matters if you plan to study part of your degree elsewhere in Europe through an exchange, or want your North Macedonian degree recognized after you move to another country.

Degree types and how long they take

First-cycle (bachelor) programs come in two forms. Academic bachelor programs run 4 years and carry 240 ECTS credits. Professionally-oriented bachelor programs run 3 years and carry 180 ECTS credits. Which type you get depends on the field and the institution, not on your choice as a student.

Second-cycle (master's) programs add 1-2 years and 60-120 ECTS on top of your bachelor's, bringing most students to 300 ECTS total by graduation. Third-cycle (doctoral) programs follow, usually running 3 years, combining coursework with independent research supervised by a mentor and ending in a defended thesis. Doctoral study sits under the same institutional accreditation rules as bachelor and master's programs, so check a program's accreditation status the same way you would for an undergraduate degree.

Grading scale

North Macedonian universities grade coursework and exams on a scale from 5 to 10, where 5 means fail and 10 means excellent, close to a distinction. Passing grades run from 6 upward, and each grade carries a written description of performance rather than a bare number, following the official UKIM grading scale . If you studied under a different grading system before moving, expect your transcript to get converted during recognition rather than read directly against this scale.

Public universities and where they are

North Macedonia has 5 public universities. Ss. Cyril and Methodius University (UKIM) in Skopje, founded in 1949, is the oldest and largest, with dozens of faculties spanning nearly every field. St. Kliment Ohridski University in Bitola, Goce Delčev University in Štip, the State University of Tetovo, and the University for Information Science and Technology in Ohrid cover the rest of the country.

Alongside these sit a number of private and international universities, several offering English-taught programs aimed at students from outside North Macedonia.

Quality assurance and accreditation

Every higher education institution in North Macedonia needs institutional accreditation and working permission from the Minister of Education and Science before it enrolls students. The Agency for Quality of Higher Education runs external evaluation of institutions and individual study programs, drawing on a register of domestic and foreign experts, according to Eurydice . Checking that a program carries current accreditation is a sensible first step before you apply anywhere, public or private.

Language of instruction

Most programs teach in Macedonian. The State University of Tetovo teaches primarily in Albanian, reflecting the large Albanian-speaking population in that region. Several private universities, including international ones based in Skopje, run full programs in English for students who do not speak Macedonian or Albanian.

How the academic year is structured

The 2025-26 academic year begins in September or October. Teaching runs in two blocks: September/October to December, then January/February to May/June. Exam periods sit between these blocks, from November/December to January/February, and again from June through September. The academic year formally closes in August or September, according to Eurydice .

This calendar leaves a long summer exam and retake window, common across this part of Europe and different from the tighter single-sitting exam periods you find in some Western European systems.

Where it stands compared to the rest of Europe

North Macedonia is not an EU member, so its degrees do not carry the automatic EU-wide recognition a degree from an EU country carries. Recognition still happens, through the standard international channel: an ENIC-NARIC assessment in the country where you want to use the degree. In practice, a Bologna-structured, ECTS-based degree from an accredited North Macedonian university is well understood and treated fairly by universities and employers elsewhere in Europe.

For students from other European countries, this system offers a familiar structure at a lower cost of study than in Western Europe, with the same logic on credits, cycles, and degree length that you already know from home.
