NSFAS Allowances Explained: Accommodation, Living, Transport and Books
By Muntasir • Published Sep 18, 2026 • Updated Sep 18, 2026 • African Scholarships & Student Funding
NSFAS pays allowances beyond tuition, accommodation, living, transport, book, and an incidental/personal care allowance, into a bank account of your choice. Catered students get accommodation covered plus an incidental/personal care allowance; non-catered students get a living allowance instead.
💵 Accommodation allowance covers residence or accredited private housing.
🏠 Living allowance covers food and personal items for non-catered students.
Transport allowance applies to students who commute.
Book allowance covers textbooks and required study materials.
Check nsfas.org.za or your financial aid office for the current year's exact amounts.
The allowance categories
NSFAS funding covers more than tuition. If you qualify, you also receive allowances toward the practical cost of studying away from home.
- Accommodation allowance, toward rent at a residence or accredited private accommodation.
- Living allowance, toward food and personal items, mainly for students in non-catered accommodation.
- Transport allowance, for students who commute rather than live near campus.
- Book or learning material allowance, toward textbooks, stationery, and required study materials.
- Incidental or personal care allowance, toward personal items, paid to students in catered residences.
Catered vs non-catered accommodation
If you live in a residence that includes meals in the fee, NSFAS classifies you as catered, and your accommodation allowance covers the residence fee. Instead of the full living allowance, catered students receive an incidental/personal care allowance for personal items. If you live in private accommodation or a residence without meals included, NSFAS classifies you as non-catered, and you receive a separate living allowance on top of your accommodation allowance.
How NSFAS pays your allowances
NSFAS pays allowances into a bank account of your choice, using the banking details you submit and NSFAS verifies. The old NSFAS Direct Payment Black Card is no longer in use and NSFAS asks students not to use it. Once your funding is confirmed and your registration is verified, allowances are paid to your account, usually in installments through the academic year rather than as one lump sum.
Your accommodation allowance may go directly to your accredited landlord or residence, depending on the accommodation arrangement NSFAS has with that provider, rather than to your personal account.
Where to find the current allowance amounts
NSFAS reviews allowance caps most academic years, and amounts differ by institution, location, and accommodation type. Check the allowance information published on nsfas.org.za for the academic year you are funded in, or ask your institution's financial aid office, since they confirm the exact figures that apply to your registration.
If your allowance payment is late or missing
- Confirm your registration status is finalized with your institution, since NSFAS only pays allowances after registration is verified.
- Check that the banking details you submitted to NSFAS are complete, correct, and verified.
- Contact your institution's financial aid office first, since many payment delays trace back to unconfirmed registration data rather than an NSFAS error.
- Escalate to the NSFAS Contact Centre if your institution confirms your registration is correct and the payment is still outstanding.
