NUC List of Illegal and Unaccredited Universities Operating in Nigeria

TL;DR

The National Universities Commission maintains a public list of illegal institutions that operate as universities without a licence. The list names 58 closed institutions and flags several more under investigation, but NUC itself calls the list not exhaustive, so absence from it is not proof an institution is legitimate.

  • 📩 Find the list on NUC's official website, nuc.edu.ng

  • Certificates from listed institutions are not recognized for NYSC, jobs, or further study

  • 🎓 Some flagged institutions were still under court proceedings, not fully closed

  • ⏱️ Always verify a university separately using NUC's approved list, since the illegal list alone will not catch every new fraud

What the list covers

NUC publishes a list titled Illegal Universities Closed Down by NUC on its official website. The list names institutions that operated as universities without a licence from the Federal Government of Nigeria, in violation of the Education (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions) Act. NUC states plainly that anyone who patronizes these institutions or obtains a certificate from them does so at their own risk.

The list names 58 closed illegal institutions. Several operated without any physical campus in Nigeria, others ran as unapproved study centres, and some claimed unaccredited affiliation with foreign universities.

Institutions still under investigation

Beyond the 58 closed institutions, NUC names a smaller group under investigation or facing court proceedings rather than confirmed closure, including National University of Nigeria in Keffi, North Central University in Otukpo, and Christ Alive Christian Seminary and University in Enugu. Their legal status can shift as cases move through court, so a name appearing here does not automatically mean it is permanently shut.

Why the list is not exhaustive

NUC's own page states the list is not exhaustive. New fraudulent institutions and unlicensed study centres appear faster than any single list can track, and the published version does not carry a stated update schedule. Nigerian outlets have reported on the same 58-institution list in later years as public awareness campaigns resurfaced it, which can make the list look newer than it is.

Treat this list as a starting warning, not a complete database. The only way to confirm a university is legitimate is to check it against NUC's approved federal, state, and private university lists directly, and to confirm your specific program's accreditation status with the institution.

How to protect yourself

  • Search the NUC illegal institutions list for the exact name before you apply

  • Separately confirm the university appears on NUC's approved list, since a clean record on one list does not guarantee approval on the other

  • Confirm the institution admits through JAMB's Central Admissions Processing System if it claims to run undergraduate degree programs

  • Report suspected illegal operators to NUC through its official contact channels rather than relying only on rumor or social media
