What NYSC Exemption Means
Exemption releases you from the compulsory one-year service without requiring you to attend camp or serve at a Place of Primary Assignment. NYSC still issues you a certificate, the Exemption Certificate, which functions the same way a discharge certificate does when employers or institutions ask for proof of your service status.
Who Qualifies
According to guidance on the NYSC exemption certificate page , you qualify for exemption if any of these apply to you:
You were 30 years old or older on the date your institution officially confirmed your graduation. This is the graduation date on your statement of result, not the date you registered or the date you turned 30.
You are a serving or former member of the Nigerian armed forces, the Police, or another security agency who already completed training considered equivalent to NYSC service.
You hold a national honour awarded by the Federal Government.
Part-time, sandwich, and distance learning graduates are a separate case. NYSC issues them an Exclusion Letter rather than an Exemption Certificate, even if they are under 30, because the program is designed around full-time study. The two documents differ in name but serve a similar purpose for employment and further study.
How to Apply
Confirm your eligibility category before you start, since the portal asks you to select a reason and will reject applications that do not match your documents.
Register or log in on the NYSC portal and select the exemption pathway instead of fresh mobilization registration.
Enter your NIN, institution, course, and graduation date exactly as they appear on your statement of result.
Upload your degree or HND certificate or statement of result, your birth certificate or age declaration where age is the basis of your exemption, and your passport photograph.
Pay the applicable processing fee on the portal and submit.
Print your exemption slip and keep it until your certificate is ready for collection.
Collecting Your Certificate
NYSC state secretariats or the designated collection point named on your slip issue the physical Exemption Certificate after processing. Bring your original documents and government-issued ID when you collect it, since officials cross-check them against your application before releasing the certificate.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Do not confuse exemption with exclusion. If you studied part-time, expect an exclusion letter regardless of your age, and applying under the wrong category delays your request. Double check that your graduation date on your statement of result is unambiguous. Some institutions record a convocation date separate from the actual graduation date, and NYSC uses the academic graduation date, not the convocation ceremony date, to assess your age eligibility.
Keep copies of everything you submit. If your certificate is delayed, a printed exemption slip and your registration documents are what employers or NYSC verification officers will ask to see in the meantime.
