TL;DR

Both OET and IELTS work for UK Nursing and Midwifery Council and Australian AHPRA registration, but OET tests healthcare English while IELTS Academic tests general English. Check the exact score table before you book, since the UK and Australia set different passing marks.

  • 🎓 NMC UK: IELTS Academic needs 7.0 in Reading, Listening, and Speaking, and 6.5 in Writing. OET needs Grade B in three sub-tests and C+ in Writing.

  • 🏠 AHPRA Australia: IELTS Academic needs 7.0 in each of the four components under the standard effective March 18, 2025. OET needs Grade B in all four sub-tests.

  • 📩 OET uses healthcare scenarios such as patient case notes and referral letters. IELTS Academic uses general topics.

  • ⏱️ AHPRA's standard, effective March 18, 2025, set IELTS Writing at 6.5 (down from 7.0) while keeping the other components at 7.0.

OET vs IELTS for Filipino Nurses Applying to Work in the UK or Australia

Why the test choice matters

The UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) both require proof of English proficiency before they register an overseas-trained nurse. Filipino nurses choose between OET, a healthcare-specific test, and IELTS Academic, a general English test. Both are accepted by each regulator, so the choice comes down to your English background and which test format suits your strengths.

NMC UK score requirements

To register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council , IELTS Academic candidates need an overall score of 7.0, with a minimum of 7.0 in Reading, Listening, and Speaking, and 6.5 in Writing. OET candidates need a minimum Grade B in Listening, Reading, and Speaking, and Grade C+ in Writing. The Royal College of Nursing lists the same thresholds for nurses applying from the Philippines and other non-exempt countries.

Listening7.0Grade B
Reading7.0Grade B
Speaking7.0Grade B

AHPRA Australia score requirements

Australia's AHPRA English language skills registration standard took effect on March 18, 2025. Under that standard, IELTS Academic requires 7.0 in Listening, Reading, and Speaking and 6.5 in Writing (lowered from 7.0 under the same March 2025 revision ), OET requires Grade B in all four sub-tests, and PTE Academic requires 65 in each component.

How the test formats differ

IELTS Academic covers general topics: an academic reading passage, a data description and essay for writing, and everyday conversation topics for speaking and listening. OET uses healthcare material throughout. The Listening section plays consultations and case presentations, Reading uses medical texts, Writing asks you to compose a referral letter from case notes, and Speaking runs two role plays built around a nurse-patient scenario.

Nurses already comfortable reading patient charts and writing handover notes in English often find OET's healthcare context easier to work with than IELTS's general topics. Nurses stronger in general academic English, or applying to schools or other visas alongside nursing registration, sometimes prefer IELTS because one score serves more than one application.

Time and format

IELTS Academic runs about 2 hours 45 minutes: 30 minutes Listening, 60 minutes Reading, 60 minutes Writing, and a separate Speaking interview of 11 to 14 minutes. OET runs close to the same length, split into four sub-tests with a similar time allocation, with Speaking done as a role play with an interlocutor instead of a general conversation. Neither test is noticeably faster to sit, so pick based on content, not on time saved.

Where to test in the Philippines

Both tests run in Manila, Cebu, and other major cities through British Council and IDP for IELTS, and through OET's approved venues and computer-based sessions for OET. Computer-delivered sessions for both tests release results faster than paper-based sessions, which matters if your job offer or registration application has a deadline.

Choosing between them

  • Book OET if you want practice material that mirrors ward language and you plan to use the score only for nursing registration.

  • Book IELTS Academic if you also need the score for a university application, a separate visa category, or a job outside healthcare that accepts IELTS but not OET.

  • Check the regulator's page directly before booking, since AHPRA and NMC update accepted score tables on different schedules.

Test validity and results

Both NMC and AHPRA accept test results within two years of the registration application date. Keep your Test Report Form (IELTS) or Statement of Results (OET), since both regulators ask for the original document during verification, not a photocopy or screenshot.
