Oklahoma Financial Aid: State Grants, Scholarships and Free College Programs

Oklahoma's biggest state aid program is Oklahoma's Promise, which covers tuition for eligible students who sign up in middle or early high school and keep their grades up. Two more need-based grants, OTAG and OTEG, stack on top of the FAFSA for students who still have unmet need.

Oklahoma's Promise: the state's tuition scholarship
Oklahoma's Promise , formerly known as OHLAP, is the state's flagship college scholarship program. It covers tuition at Oklahoma public colleges and universities, or a comparable amount toward tuition at eligible private colleges and technology centers, for students who qualify by family income and academic performance.
To qualify, your family income cannot exceed $60,000 at the time you enroll , with a higher threshold for larger families, up to $80,000 for households with five or more dependent children. You need a 2.5 GPA across all four years of high school and a 2.5 GPA in the 17 required college-preparatory core courses.
Sign-up matters most in middle and early high school. Students in grades 8 through 11 are encouraged to apply by June 30, and a hard December 31 deadline applies to students applying during their senior year, for the following fall's enrollment. Apply through your high school counselor or directly on the Oklahoma's Promise site well before your senior year to leave time for the required coursework.
Once you enroll in college, Oklahoma's Promise checks your family income again and requires you to stay in good academic standing to keep the award each year. Confirm the current renewal requirements with your college's financial aid office before your first semester, since the rules for keeping the scholarship in college differ from the rules to originally qualify.
Oklahoma Tuition Aid Grant (OTAG)
The Oklahoma Tuition Aid Grant is a need-based grant layered on top of your FAFSA results. You qualify by being Pell Grant eligible in the term you apply, based on your Student Aid Index.
The maximum annual award is the lesser of 75% of your enrollment costs or up to $1,500 at community colleges and career technology centers, up to $2,000 at regional universities, and up to $3,000 at research universities. OTAG runs on limited state funding each year, and the program typically receives more eligible applicants than it can fund, so filing the FAFSA early can decide whether you get an award.
Oklahoma Tuition Equalization Grant (OTEG)
The Oklahoma Tuition Equalization Grant targets students at Oklahoma's private, nonprofit colleges and universities. It pays $2,000 a year, split into $1,000 per semester, for full-time students with family income at or below $50,000 and unmet financial need after other aid.
You apply by filing the FAFSA and getting your college's financial aid office to confirm your remaining need. Your school selects and notifies OTEG recipients directly, so contact the financial aid office at the private college you plan to attend to confirm you are in the applicant pool.

None of these replace the FAFSA. File it every year starting October 1 for the following fall, since Oklahoma's Promise, OTAG, and OTEG all confirm eligibility through your FAFSA data, and OTAG in particular is first-come, first-served against a fixed state budget.

If you are still in middle or early high school, apply for Oklahoma's Promise first since it locks in the biggest long-term benefit and has the earliest deadline. File the FAFSA every year regardless of which programs apply to you, since it also unlocks federal Pell Grants and work-study on top of state aid. Contact your target college's financial aid office directly to ask which state grants they participate in and what paperwork they need beyond the FAFSA.
