Why You Need OCT Certification

The Ontario College of Teachers regulates who teaches in Ontario's publicly funded schools. Finishing your B.Ed does not put you in front of a class on its own, you need a Certificate of Qualification from OCT first. Every publicly funded school board in Ontario checks your OCT status before it lists you as a qualified supply or contract teacher.

Step 1: Apply Online

Apply through apply.oct.ca once your program confirms you completed every requirement. Gather your documents before you start, OCT asks you to pay all applicable fees at the point of application.

Step 2: Pay the Registration Fee

New applicants pay a $140 registration fee . Internationally trained teachers pay an additional $222 evaluation fee. Every listed OCT fee already includes applicable tax.

Step 3: Submit Your Documents

• Proof of identity

• A criminal record check, a vulnerable sector check is optional

• Proof of name change, where it applies to you

• Language proficiency test scores, where it applies to you

Your B.Ed institution sends 2 documents straight to OCT on your behalf, your academic transcript and your Statement of Professional Standing. You do not submit these yourself, they arrive directly from the granting institution, whether that's OISE, another university faculty of education, or a Master of Teaching program.

If You Trained Outside Ontario

If you completed your teacher education outside Ontario, in another Canadian province or another country, OCT reviews your credential separately from a straight Ontario B.Ed file. Expect a longer review, the additional $222 evaluation fee, and possibly a request for further coursework or an exam before OCT issues your certificate. Confirm your specific path on OCT's own requirements page rather than assuming your out-of-province credential transfers automatically.

Step 4: Track Your Status Page

OCT emails you within 10 business days of receiving your application, with a link to your Status Page. It lists documents already received, documents still missing, and any next step OCT needs from you.

Your application stays valid for 1 year from your submission date. If OCT has not received every required document by then, you reapply and pay the registration fee again.

Common Delays and How to Avoid Them

• Your B.Ed institution hasn't sent your Statement of Professional Standing yet, follow up with your faculty's registrar directly rather than waiting on OCT.

• Your criminal record check has expired or wasn't the version OCT accepts, confirm the exact type OCT wants before you book one.

• You changed your name or address after applying without updating OCT, mismatched records slow down document matching.

• You let your 1-year application window lapse waiting on a single missing document, contact OCT before the deadline if a document is delayed outside your control.

Timeline From Application to First Teaching Job

Plan for a few months between finishing your B.Ed and holding an active certificate. Your Status Page notification arrives within 10 business days, but your institution's Statement of Professional Standing and transcript can take additional weeks to reach OCT, and your own document gathering, a criminal record check especially, adds more time before your file is complete.

Step 5: Pay Your Annual Membership Fee

Once OCT approves your file, you pay the $200 Annual Membership Fee to activate your membership and receive your Certificate of Qualification. You pay this fee every year you stay a member, on top of the one-time registration fee.

When to Apply

Apply as soon as your program confirms you completed every requirement, do not wait for your convocation ceremony. School boards hire through spring and summer, and a pending OCT file costs you interview slots. Make sure you already know which teachable division your credential actually covers, since school boards hire by division and a mismatch means applying to postings you don't actually qualify for.

What Comes Next

With your certificate active, you're eligible for a teaching contract with any Ontario school board. Keep your Annual Membership Fee current every year, a lapsed membership needs a $130 reinstatement fee to restore.

What Certification Does Not Guarantee

OCT certification confirms you meet the province's legal requirement to teach, it does not guarantee a job. School boards run their own hiring process, often through supply lists before permanent postings, separate from anything OCT reviews. Build your resume and any board-specific supply list applications alongside your OCT file, not after it.

Keeping Your Certificate Active

Your OCT membership needs annual renewal and payment of the Annual Membership Fee to stay active. If you take time away from teaching, for another career, parental leave, or study abroad, your membership lapses if you stop paying the AMF. Reinstating a lapsed membership costs a separate $130 reinstatement fee on top of catching up any outstanding AMF balance.
