Standard OPT

Optional Practical Training lets F-1 students work in the US for 12 months in a job directly related to their major, either during their program or after graduation. You apply through your Designated School Official, who recommends OPT in SEVIS, then you file Form I-765 with USCIS. Processing takes weeks, so apply as soon as your DSO is able to recommend you, up to 90 days before your program end date.

STEM OPT extension

Graduates with a degree in a STEM-designated field from a SEVP-certified school apply for a 24-month extension once their standard OPT is active, bringing total work authorization to 36 months. The extension requires your employer to be enrolled in USCIS's E-Verify program and to sign a Form I-983 training plan setting out formal learning objectives and supervision. You must work at least 20 hours per week for the sponsoring employer, and the degree used to qualify does not have to be your most recent one if an earlier STEM degree from a US school still applies.

Timeline and unemployment limits

File your STEM OPT extension application within 60 days of your DSO's SEVIS recommendation, and no later than the end date on your current OPT card. Standard OPT allows up to 90 days of unemployment before your status is at risk, and the STEM extension adds another 60 days, for 150 days total across both periods combined. 2025-26 visa vetting changes to know

OPT itself did not change its core rules in 2025, but getting or keeping F-1 status did. Reporting requirements while on OPT

You must report your employer's name and address, and any change of employer or address, to your DSO within 10 days of the change, through the SEVP Portal. Missing this reporting requirement affects your unemployment day count and your status, so treat it as a standing task every time your work situation changes, not a one-time filing.

The cap-gap extension for students moving to H-1B

If you are on standard OPT or the STEM extension and an employer files an H-1B petition for you before your OPT expires, your F-1 status and work authorization automatically extend under what is known as the cap-gap rule, covering the period until your H-1B start date of 1 October. This lets many ASEAN graduates continue working without interruption between the end of OPT and the start of H-1B status, provided the employer files during the correct filing window.

Choosing a STEM-designated program

Not every technical-sounding degree carries STEM designation for OPT purposes, since eligibility is tied to your program's Classification of Instructional Program code, not its name alone. Confirm with your school's international student office whether your specific program code appears on the official STEM-designated list before you count on the 24-month extension in your planning, since two similarly named programs at different schools carry different codes.

Applying for a second STEM OPT extension

Only one 24-month STEM OPT extension is available per lifetime, unless you later earn a second, higher-level STEM degree from a different level of study, such as a master's after a bachelor's in a STEM field, which then qualifies you for a further 24-month extension under that new degree. Keep every I-20, EAD card and I-983 training plan from each stage of your OPT history, since USCIS sometimes requests this documentation years later if you apply for a second extension or a change of status.
