Parcoursup: How France's University Wish-List Portal Works

Parcoursup is France's national portal for university admissions. You register in January, add up to 10 wishes by mid-March, confirm them by early April, and get responses from June through July, with a backup round running into September.

What Parcoursup does
Parcoursup is the single platform French universities, grandes écoles, BTS programs, and most other post-baccalauréat courses use to collect applications. Every candidate builds one profile, adds a list of programs, and waits for institutions to respond one wish at a time. The system replaced separate application processes for each school with one shared calendar and one login, run by the Ministry of Higher Education (parcoursup.gouv.fr ).
Who applies through Parcoursup
French final-year lycée students use Parcoursup by default. EU, EEA, and Swiss nationals living in the EU/EEA apply the same way, as do international students who completed their last two years of secondary school in France. If you live outside France and hold a foreign diploma, you generally do not register on Parcoursup directly. You apply through Études en France, the procedure Campus France runs with French embassies and consulates, which then feeds your file into the same admission system (Campus France ).
The calendar
The exact dates shift by a few days each year but follow the same structure. For the 2025-26 cycle, registration opened January 19, 2026 (Ministère de l'Éducation nationale ).

How wishes and offers work
You do not rank your 10 wishes. You list them in any order and each program answers independently once the admission phase opens. An offer arrives as "oui" (accept, and your other wishes close), "oui si" (yes with conditions, usually extra support courses), or you stay on a ranked waiting list. You reply to each offer within a set number of days or you lose it, and the next candidate on the waiting list takes your place.
Every wish needs a short motivation text explaining why you chose that program. Selective courses such as BTS, BUT, some licences, and classes préparatoires also review your school transcripts and reference letters. Non-selective licences at public universities admit local-area candidates first when oversubscribed, then work through remaining applicants by academic profile.
Phase Complémentaire
If you finish the main phase without any offer, or you want to try for programs that still have room, Phase Complémentaire opens in June and stays open until early September. You add up to 10 new wishes, limited to formations that report open spots. Because this phase exists specifically to fill remaining places, response times tend to run faster than in the main round.
If you don't receive any offer
Candidates without an offer at the end of the main phase can request help from the Commission d'Accès à l'Enseignement Supérieur (CAES), a rectorate-level body that finds an open place matching your profile. You can use Phase Complémentaire in parallel with this. Contact your rectorat as soon as the main phase ends rather than waiting.
Sub-wishes and the auto-reply option
A single wish can include several sub-wishes, for example the same BTS program at different locations, and these sub-wishes only count as one of your 10 total wishes. This lets you spread your chances across several campuses without spending an extra wish slot.
Once offers start arriving in June, you can activate the répondeur automatique (auto-reply), a tool that keeps your top-ranked pending wish and declines lower-ranked ones automatically as better offers come in. This saves you from checking the platform daily during the admission phase, though you still log in occasionally to confirm your final choice.
Reading a program's attendus
Every program listed on Parcoursup publishes its attendus, a set of expected skills and prior coursework the admissions committee looks for. Read this before you write your motivation text, it tells you exactly what the committee weighs, from specific lycée subject combinations to language levels or portfolio requirements for creative courses.
Cost
Registering on Parcoursup itself is free. Some private schools and certain BTS or BUT programs charge their own application or file fees separately, so check each program's page before confirming a wish that involves a fee.
Tips for international applicants
Confirm whether you fall under the direct Parcoursup route or Études en France before you start. Campus France offices in your country confirm this.
Prepare document translations and diploma equivalence evidence early. Selective programs ask for these at the file stage, not after an offer.
Write a distinct motivation text for each wish. Generic copies read as generic to admission committees.
Track deadlines in your own time zone. Parcoursup runs on French time and does not extend for late confirmations.
