How NUC regulates part-time study

Nigeria's National Universities Commission (NUC) sets the rules every public and private university follows to run part-time and sandwich degree programs. A university offers a part-time version of a course only if the full-time equivalent already exists at that university, holds full accreditation, and runs on an NUC-approved campus. Admission, staffing, library and facility standards must match the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) used for the full-time version of the same course, according to NUC .

A university also needs to have already produced two full sets of full-time graduates in a course, and pass NUC's resource verification, before starting that course part time. Starting a new part-time program without NUC's specific approval is a violation the commission can sanction.

Admission requirements

NUC's national rule is that admission into part-time programs runs through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the same body that places full-time undergraduates. In practice, some university institutes run their own O-level based screening for part-time or distance-mode intakes instead of a JAMB cut-off mark, so check the exact route with your chosen institute rather than assuming JAMB applies the same way everywhere.

Beyond JAMB, most part-time programs ask for the standard five O-level credits, including English language and mathematics, obtained in no more than two sittings. Holders of an HND, ND or NCE in a related field commonly qualify for direct entry into a related part-time degree, skipping the first year.

Programs you cannot study part time

NUC does not allow part-time delivery of Law, Medicine and Medical Sciences, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Engineering and Technology, or Environmental Sciences, regardless of university, per NUC . These programs need the practical training hours and supervised clinical or laboratory work that a part-time schedule cannot deliver to NUC's standard.

Where part-time and sandwich programs run

Several long-established universities run part-time institutes with their own names and structures. The University of Lagos runs two: the Distance Learning Institute (DLI), a weekend program covering courses such as accounting, business administration, economics and education, and the Institute of Continuing Education (ICE), which requires an entrance screening and covers arts, sciences, management and social sciences, per the university's own admission materials. The University of Ibadan runs its part-time offering through its Distance Learning Centre, admitting on O-level results with department-specific subject requirements, such as a mathematics pass for psychology applicants.

Education faculties at several universities run sandwich programs aimed specifically at working teachers, delivered in blocks during school holidays rather than as a weekly evening or weekend schedule. Confirm which model, weekend, evening or holiday sandwich, a university uses before you apply, since the workload and time commitment differ a lot between them.

What to expect from the schedule

Weekend and evening part-time degrees typically run over four to five years, a year or two longer than the equivalent full-time degree, spreading the same coursework over fewer contact hours each week. Sandwich programs compress teaching into holiday periods, so you attend full days on campus for a few weeks each year rather than a weekly class schedule. Either way, expect the same final exams, project or thesis requirements and NUC-accredited certificate as the full-time version, since NUC will not approve a part-time program unless it meets the same academic standard.
