How to Pay Nigerian University Fees Through Remita
By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Aug 07, 2026 • Money & Budgeting
Remita is the payment platform many Nigerian universities still use to collect school fees, working through a Remita Retrieval Reference, or RRR, that you generate on your school portal or on remita.net before paying online or at a bank. Each fee needs its own RRR, so you cannot reuse one code for a different payment or a different session.
💵 Generate your RRR from your school portal first. This is faster than doing it directly on remita.net.
📩 Pay with a bank card online, or take the RRR to any commercial or microfinance bank.
⏱️ Each RRR is tied to one specific payment. You need a new one for every fee.
🏠 Keep your payment receipt and RRR. Your bursary department needs both if the portal does not update.
Confirm on your own school portal which gateway it uses, since federal revenue collection moved from Remita to TMRAS in March 2025.
What Remita Is
Remita is the electronic payment platform many Nigerian federal and state universities use to collect fees, from acceptance fees and school fees to hostel and other departmental charges. Note that the Federal Government replaced Remita with the Treasury Management and Revenue Assurance System (TMRAS) for federal revenue collection in March 2025, so check your own institution's portal to see which gateway it uses. Instead of paying cash over a counter, you generate a unique code called a Remita Retrieval Reference, or RRR, that identifies exactly what you are paying for, then settle it online or at a bank.
Step 1: Generate Your RRR
Most students generate their RRR directly from their university's student portal, which is the simpler route since the school pre-fills the amount and purpose of payment for you, following steps similar to those the University of Nigeria Nsukka publishes for its students. Log in to your portal, go to the fee payment or bursary section, select the specific fee you are paying, such as school fees or acceptance fee, and the portal generates an RRR automatically once you confirm the amount.
If your institution instead asks you to generate the RRR directly through Remita, visit remita.net, select the option to pay a biller, and search for your university by name. Enter the correct payment purpose, for example your university's acceptance fee or school fees category, enter the amount specified by your school, and submit to generate your RRR code.
Step 2: Choose How to Pay
Once you have an RRR, you have two main ways to complete payment:
Pay online immediately using a debit or credit card linked to a Nigerian bank account, entering your RRR on the Remita payment page or your portal's payment gateway.
Take your RRR to any commercial or microfinance bank branch and pay over the counter or via the bank's own mobile app, quoting the RRR to the teller or entering it in the app's bill payment section.
Bank branch payment is useful if you do not have a card that works for online payment or if your network connection is unreliable, since the RRR itself, once generated, does not expire immediately and stays valid for a set period.
Step 3: Confirm and Keep Your Receipt
After payment, Remita issues a payment confirmation, and most university portals update your fee status automatically within a short time. Save or print your Remita payment receipt regardless of what the portal shows, since this is your proof of payment if the portal is slow to update or if a dispute comes up later during clearance or registration.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Do not reuse an old RRR for a new payment. Every fee, including a repeated payment for a different session, needs its own newly generated RRR.
Confirm the amount matches exactly what your school's fee schedule states for your session before paying, since some universities list slightly different figures for new versus returning students.
Double check you selected the correct biller, matching your specific university, since Remita lists many institutions and a wrong selection sends your money to a different account entirely.
If a payment fails after your account has been debited, do not generate a new RRR and pay again immediately. Wait for the standard reversal window your bank observes, then contact Remita support or your bank if the amount has not reversed.
If Your Portal Does Not Reflect Payment
A delay between paying and seeing your fee marked as paid on the school portal is common, usually resolving within 24 to 48 hours. If it does not update after that window, visit your university's bursary department with your Remita RRR and payment receipt rather than repeating the payment. Bursary staff can manually confirm your payment against Remita's records and update your account, which is faster than waiting indefinitely for an automatic sync.
Fees Beyond School Fees
Universities also use Remita for smaller charges through the same session, including hostel fees, departmental dues, and late registration penalties where applicable. The process is identical each time: generate a fresh RRR specific to that charge, then pay online or at a bank branch.
